history

Maqellara was first mentioned in 1467 in an Ottoman register . Accordingly, there were seven houses in the village at that time.

The Allajbeg Mosque in the village of Burim, which was built in the 16th century, and the Church of the Transfiguration in the village of Herbel, which dates from pre-Ottoman times, are among the national cultural monuments of Albania.

Economy and Infrastructure

The majority of the inhabitants are employed in agriculture. Many residents have emigrated to the capital Tirana or to the west as a result of unemployment and poverty.

The region is economically backward and there is a lack of investment in infrastructure. The Albanian national road SH 6 leads west of the village to Peshkopia. The not yet completed Rruga e Arbërit will in future connect Maqellara more closely to the nationwide road network. The capital Tirana will then be more directly connected to the North Macedonian capital Skopje . Maqellare is connected to the north Macedonian town of Debar, less than ten kilometers away, via the border crossing at Bllata .
