The Marbach reservoir (also called Marbachsee or Marbach reservoir ) is a reservoir in the Odenwald . It is located on the Marbach in the Hessian Odenwaldkreis ( Germany ).
It was originally built between 1978 and 1982 by the Mümling Water Association , which is the operator of the dam , for flood protection , but has also officially been used for recreation since 1986 .
Geographical location
The Marbach reservoir is located in the Odenwald. The northern part of the lake belongs to the Haisterbach district of the city of Erbach , the south-eastern part of the Hetzbach district of the city of Oberzent , the south-western part of the Hüttenthal district of the Mossautal municipality ; they are all located in the southern part of the Odenwaldkreis. The western Mümling tributary Marbach is dammed up by the Marbach dam built about 8 km (as the crow flies ) south-southwest of Erbach . The hamlet of Marbach lies to the east below it .
Building occasion and costs
The main reason for the construction of the Marbach reservoir was the flood protection of the villages downstream. Since the Marbach has a relatively large catchment area , the drainage capacity of the Mümling could easily be exceeded after periods of rain or melt. Since the completion of the dam, the inflow of the Marbach into the Mümling can be controlled.
The entire dam , for the construction of which a total of DM 31 million was required, was inaugurated in 1985 after trials.
Reservoir
The Marbach reservoir, which is located just a little southeast of the municipality of Mossautal and only a little northwest of Beerfelden, is the largest still water in the Odenwald , with an area of around 22 hectares in the case of permanent traffic jams and 49 hectares in the case of full traffic jams . Its storage space comprises 0.709 million m³ with permanent traffic jams and 3.11 million m³ with full traffic jams, and its catchment area is around 56 km². The reservoir target of the lake is at 265.2 m above sea level. NHN . The height of the full dam is 270.80 m.
The reservoir is traversed in a west-east direction by the eponymous Marbach, which flows into the Mümling about 1 km below the Marbach dam as a left tributary . In addition, the lake is fed by two nameless streams. The stream that flows into the southern bank rises in a side valley, the Meisengrund, and after around 1.5 km flows into the Marbachsee, which has a small bay here.
Due to its valley location, the Marbach reservoir has an elongated shape; it is a maximum of 1.3 km long and 110 to 240 m wide. In today's lake area, the valley was uninhabited, so that the extensive forests almost reach the lake. On the north bank, the federal highway 460 that runs here separates the water from the forest area. The mountains north and south of the reservoir reach heights of 409 and 407 m respectively.
Dam and power plant
The Marbach dam is a dam that was built in the Marbachtal between Mossautal- Hüttenthal and Beerfelden- Hetzbach from 1978 to 1982 as an earth and stone rubble dam with an asphalt concrete outer skin and diaphragm wall in the subsoil. The length of the dam, which has a volume of 70,000 m³, is 150 m at the top and 80 m at the bottom, its width is 9 m at the top and 80 m at the bottom. The top of the dam is at a height of 255 m .
A small hydropower plant with 80 kW output was attached to the Marbach dam .
leisure
Another reason for the construction of the Marbach reservoir was its use for recreational and leisure purposes. Activities there include bathing , boating , windsurfing , sailing , fishing and hiking . A circular hiking trail has been set up and parking spaces have been created. The company building received a public toilet . You can find out more about the lake on an information board attached there. The reservoir has served as a bathing lake since 1986 . One of the parking lots is a popular meeting point for motorcyclists. South, in the area of Meis reason, there is a youth campsite and a water rescue station of the DLRG .
The area of the Marbach reservoir is divided into three sections from west to east:
- " Bird sanctuary " with nature reserve island ; officially no bird or nature reserve
- Bathing area with beach, lawn and bathing islands and
- Surf and sailing area for boats up to 3.5 m² sail area.
The beach and the lawn are also suitable for small children. On weekends and on public holidays from the end of May to the beginning of September there is supervision by the DLRG, otherwise bathing is at your own risk. Because occurring in Stausse salmonella bathing was temporarily restricted or prohibited in the past, most recently early 21st century.
Since August 2009, the Sound of the Forest festival has been held annually near the lake by the non-profit organization Sound of the Forest e. V. organizes.
