Marc-Aeilko Aris (born April 24, 1959 in Baden-Baden ) is a German Medievalist , Middle Latin philologist and historian of philosophy as well as a Roman Catholic priest .

Life

Aris, originally a Protestant but later converted to the Catholic faith, studied theology from 1979 to 1985 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Fulda and at the University of Munich . In 1985 he was ordained a priest in Fulda . He then worked as a chaplain, and since 1987 he has been studying for a doctorate at the University of Munich. His doctoral supervisors were Werner Beierwaltes in philosophy , Franz Brunhölzl in Latin philology of the Middle Ages and Reiner Kaczynski in liturgical studies . In 1992 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1994 to 2000 he worked as a research assistant at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences at the Cusanus edition of the Trier department at the Institute for Cusanus Research (2000 to 2005 as a freelancer) and was a lecturer in medieval history at the University of Trier . From 2000 to 2005 he was deputy director of the Albertus Magnus Institute in Bonn and lecturer in philosophy at the University of Bonn . In 2003/04 he was the professor for Medieval Latin Philology at the University of Munich, where he has held a W3 professorship for this subject since April 28, 2005 .

Aris is a member of numerous medieval forums and has been president of the “Édition de textes” commission of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale since 2002 . Since 2003 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History and a member of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy - Philosophical Section. He is a member of the commission for the publication of the Middle Latin dictionary and the commission for the publication of the documents of Emperor Frederick II . of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . After Claudia Märtl's resignation , Aris was “Deputy President” (Head) of Monumenta Germaniae Historica from April 1, 2014 to March 8, 2018 .

In 2013 he succeeded Ludwig Mödl as university preacher at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in the "University Church " of St. Ludwig . On 14 January 2017 he called Pope Francis for a consultor of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments .
