Marc Claesen

Marc Claesen (born August 6, 1968 in Tongeren , Limburg province ; † April 24, 2015 there ) was a Belgian opera singer with the bass / bass-baritone voices .

Marc Claesen studied singing at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels with Jules Bastin and at the Maastricht Conservatory with Mya Besselink . He completed further vocal studies a. a. with Tom Krause and Walter Berry , which he later continued with Jean-Pierre Blivet. Claesen was a participant and winner of various singing competitions at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna (1994), the Francesco Viñas Competition in Barcelona (1999) and the Concorso Julian Gayarre (1998) in Pamplona . He received the Vlaamse Opera young talent award .

From 1993 to 1996 he was a guest at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Stadttheater Heidelberg . In 1996 he sang the roles of Banco / Medico in Macbeth at the Nationale Reisopera in the Netherlands ; his partners were Henk Poort as Macbeth and Frank van Aken as Macduff. In the 1996/97 season he sang the role of Conte di Ceprano in Rigoletto with the Nederlande Opera . In January 1998 Claesen made his debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid with the title role in Don Giovanni . In November 1999 he sang various small roles in a performance of Les Huguenots in the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao . In the 2001/02 season he sang the role of music teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos at the National Travel Opera in the Amsterdam City Theater . In the title role of Don Giovanni he appeared in a production by Gérard Corbiau in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris in 2002 ; his partner was Annemarie Kremer as Donna Anna.

Claesen has been engaged as a soloist at the Vlaamse Opera several times since the 1993/94 season. He made his debut there as the newcomer's friend in Billy Budd . In March / April 2002 he sang Hans Foltz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , in September / October 2002 Il Talpa / "Mole" in Il Tabarro and Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi , in May / June 2003 Pantalon in Die Liebe zu den Drei Oranges , in June / July 2003 Barone Douphol in La traviata and from October 2003 to December 2003 in Antwerp the roles of Luther and Crespel in Les Contes d'Hoffman . In the 2003/04 season he sang Graf Dominik in Arabella at the Vlaamse Opera .

Since the 2004/05 season he has appeared regularly at the Brussels Opera House (De Munt Opera). In April / May 2005 he sang the roles of First Priest / Second Armor in Die Zauberflöte , in June 2005 the role of One-Eyed in Die Frau ohne Schatten and in April 2006 Vogt Nikititsch in Boris Godunow . Claesen then also sang the roles of first priest / second armor in the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07.

In February 2006 he was a guest at the Staatstheater Darmstadt as a music teacher in Ariadne on Naxos . In June 2006 he sang Créonte in a concert performance of the opera Medée by Luigi Cherubini at Carnegie Hall in New York City .

Claesen also made guest appearances at the Lille Opera House (February / March 2005), the Cologne Opera and the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest (2001/2002).

Marc Claesen died in April 2015 at the age of 46 in his hometown Tongeren. The funeral service took place on May 2nd, 2015 in the Basilica of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwbasiliek) in Tongeren. The burial took place in the Waterschei district in Genk .
