The Geschriebenstein (also: Írott-kő , Hungarian: Írott-kő ) is 884 m, the highest elevation of the castle country and western Hungary . It is the highest point of the Günser Mountains and the easternmost foothills of the Alps . In Austria the mountain has a maximum height of 879  m above sea level. A.

The summit is located north of Rechnitz and south of Lockenhaus on the Austro-Hungarian border . The next municipality on the Hungarian side is Velem in Vas County .

At the Geschriebenstein road is the country's Memorial of Burgenland, which was built in 1961 to commemorate the fallen soldiers of both World Wars. The artistic design comes from Feri Zotter .

Origin of name

The written stone denotes the written border between the Esterházys in the north and the Batthyánys in the south.

The area is encompassed by the Geschrittenstein-Írottkő Nature Park , the first cross-border nature park between Austria and Hungary .

A stone observation tower built by the municipality of Rechnitz has stood right on the state border since 1913, replacing a wooden tower ("Árpád tower") built in 1891 by the municipality of Güns . After the fall of the “ Iron Curtain ”, it has been possible to cross the border there since 2001.

On the northern slopes above Lockenhaus is at an altitude of 507  m above sea level. A. the Margarethenwarte, a 31 m high wooden observation tower that was built in 2000.

Hiking trails

The European long-distance hiking trail E4 , a variant of the Eastern Austrian Grenzlandweg and the Burgenland long-distance hiking trail, leads over the Geschrittenstein, and the two Hungarian long-distance hiking trails Országos Kéktúra and Rockenbauer Pál Dél-dunántúli Kéktúra begin here .
