Margarita Anatolevna Ponomareva ( Russian Маргарита Анатольевна Пономарёва ., English transcription Margarita Ponomaryova , born Хромова - Chromowa - Khromova * 19th June 1963 in Balkhash , Kazakhstan SSR ) is a former Russian hurdler .

On June 22, 1984, she set a world record in the 400-meter hurdles in Kiev with a time of 53.58 s . She undercut Ana Ambrazienė's old mark by 44 hundredths of a second and was the first woman on this route to stay under 54 seconds. In the following year she lost the world record to the world champion Sabine Busch .

At the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1986 , Chromowa finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles. In contrast, she was eliminated in the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 . At the Universiade 1989 in Duisburg she won the title, and at the European Athletics Championships in 1990 in Split she reached fifth place, now starting under the name Chromowa-Ponomarjowa.

In 1991 she was used at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Seville in the 4 x 400 meter relay . The Soviet team consisting of Marina Schmonina , Lyudmyla Dschyhalowa , Ponomarjowa and Aelita Yurtschenko won the silver medal in 3: 27.95 minutes behind the German and ahead of the US team. At the World Championships in Tokyo , she was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles. The following year, she reached sixth place at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona as a starter for the United Team of the CIS .

She experienced the high point of her career at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart. In the 400-meter hurdles she won the bronze medal in a personal best of 53.48 s, behind Brit Sally Gunnell (52.74 s, world record at the time) and the American Sandra Farmer-Patrick (52.79 s). In addition, she started in Stuttgart with the Russian 4-by-400-meter relay. In the line-up Jelena Rusina , Tatjana Alexejewa , Ponomarjowa and Irina Priwalowa won the silver medal in a time of 3: 18.38 minutes behind the US and ahead of the British relay.

Margarita Ponomarjowa is 1.76 m tall, weighed 63 kg at competition times and started for Spartak Saint Petersburg.
