The Church of the Assumption of Mary , also called St. Mary of the Assumption or St. Maria , is the Catholic church in Wiedelah , a district of the district town of Goslar in Lower Saxony . It is a branch church of the parish Liebfrauen with its seat in Bad Harzburg , in the deanery Goslar-Salzgitter of the diocese of Hildesheim . The church, named after the Marian Feast of the Assumption into Heaven , is located on Kirchwinkel Street.

Since servants and soldiers had settled with their families in the vicinity of Wiedelah Castle , a church was built in 1329. On June 3, 1341, Bishop Heinrich III. Wiedelah Castle, which changed Wiedelah's affiliation from the Halberstadt diocese to the Hildesheim diocese. As a result of the Reformation , the church was Evangelical Lutheran from 1568 to 1643. During the Thirty Years' War the church was damaged and its tower was laid down. In 1647/48 the church was poorly restored, but demolished in 1747 due to its dilapidation .

The present church dates from 1747/48, the rectory from 1848 . 1911/12 the church was around today transept expanded by Bishop on May 19, 1912 Adolf Bertram ordained . In 1914 the anteroom was built at the main entrance. After the completion of the building work, the church was consecrated on May 17, 1914.

From 1968 to 1971 the interior of the church was redesigned after the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . The church has had no resident priest since 1991 . In 1993 the church roof was re-covered with clay tiles. From 2001 to 2003 a new building area was built southeast of the church, which was previously located on the southern outskirts. The church has belonged to the parish of Liebfrauen since July 1, 2007, when the parish of the Assumption of Mary was dissolved. Also since July 1, 2007, the church has belonged to the then newly established Deanery Goslar – Salzgitter. Before that she belonged to the Deanery Goslar, which was dissolved at that time. Since around 2009, the preservation of the church has been supported by the “Friends of the Historic Catholic Church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt e. V. "is supported.

Architecture and equipment

The easted church, a plastered hall church with a three-sided choir on a base made of rubble stones, is around 129 meters above sea level . The octagonal ridge turret , in which two bells hang today , was built in 1750 on the west side of the church roof.

The church offers around 190 seats. The two stained glass windows in the choir show the Holy Family at the manger and the resurrection of Jesus Christ . The baroque high altar was erected in 1670 for the church of St. Peter and Paul in Heiningen and came to the church of Wiedelah in 1821. The upper picture of the high altar shows the Annunciation of the Lord by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary . Today's Tabernacle dates from around 1920. Above the entrance to the sacristy is a crucifix attached.

In the north transept there is a crescent moon Madonna , the baptismal font , a Pietà and a statue of the Holy Family, in the south transept another crescent moon Madonna, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed, as well as a confessional and a crucifix.

14 stations of the cross hang on the side walls. The organ was built in 1925 by P. Furtwängler & Hammer from Hanover as Opus 963 and renovated in 2005 by organ builder Reinhard Hüfken from Halberstadt . In the anteroom of the church there is another statue of the Virgin Mary and the writing stand.

Other Catholic institutions in Wiedelah are the St. Joseph Kindergarten and the cemetery. The Catholic school was closed in the 1930s and replaced by the current school.
