Wanda Maria Howell (* in Gastonia , North Carolina ) is an American actress and singer .

life and career

Maria Howell was born as the oldest of six children in Gastonia, North Carolina, and graduated from Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem in 1983 with a master's degree in biology . She joined the choir of her school at the age of 13. From 1995 to 2001 she lived on the Okinawa Islands in Japan , where her ex-husband was stationed as a member of the United States Marine Corps .

She made her acting debut in 1985 in the role of a choir singer in the film The Color Purple .
