Maria Müller (born January 29, 1898 in Theresienstadt , Austria-Hungary , † March 13, 1958 in Bayreuth ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Beginning

Maria Müller was born in Theresienstadt, Bohemia , in 1898 . She received her training at the Prague Conservatory and in Vienna with Erik Schmedes . In 1919 she debuted at the Linz Opera House as "Elsa" in Lohengrin by Richard Wagner . Engagements in Brno , at the Deutsches Theater in Prague and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich followed . Even here, Maria Müller sang mainly Wagner, the core area of ​​her repertoire.

Metropolitan Opera

On January 21, 1925 she appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera New York as "Sieglinde" in Die Walküre . She sang in various world premieres such as the US premiere of Madonna imperia by Franco Alfano (February 8, 1928), Fra Gherardo by Ildebrando Pizzetti (March 29, 1929), Schwanda, the bagpiper by the Czech-American composer Jaromír Weinberger (7 November 1931) and Simon Boccanegra (29 January 1932).

Berlin

In 1926 Maria Müller was engaged by Bruno Walter at the Städtische Oper Berlin . She later moved to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden . Maria Müller had an extensive opera and song repertoire, but achieved special importance as a Wagner interpreter .

Bayreuth

In 1930 she made her debut in Bayreuth under Arturo Toscanini in the role of "Elisabeth" in Tannhäuser and the Singers' War on Wartburg . Until 1939 she appeared at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, for example in 1933 as "Eva" in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg or in 1936 as Sieglinde in Die Walküre and as Elsa in Lohengrin . A critic of the New York Herald Tribune judged her appearance in Bayreuth in 1936: “Müller’s voice is fresher and more beautiful than at the Metropolitan.” She last sang in Bayreuth at the 1944 Festival.

More roles

At the Salzburg Festival in 1931 she sang “ Eurydice ”, in 1933 “Rezia” in Oberon and in 1934 “ Donna Elvira ”. She made her debut at Covent Garden Opera in 1934 as "Eva" in the Meistersinger and in 1937 sang "Sieglinde" in Die Walküre . Her repertoire also included leading roles in Die ägyptische Helena , Jenufa , "Iphigenie" in Iphigénie en Tauride , "Djula" in Ero der Schelm by Jakov Gotovac , "Pamina" in The Magic Flute , Tosca and "Marguerite" in Faust by Gounod . She was married to the actor Carl W. Tetting .

After the end of the Second World War , Maria Müller lived in Bayreuth in the last years of her life. She was buried in the city cemetery in Bayreuth. Her grave was between the graves of Franz Liszt and the Wagner family. The city of Bayreuth took care of the grave in 1983. The grave was disbanded in spring 2011.
