Mario Kienzl (born December 19, 1983 in Graz ) is a former Austrian football player in the position of midfielder who is currently working as a football coach .

Career

Kienzl's first association was the LUV Graz (Apprentice Support Association). At the age of 14 he switched to SK Sturm Graz and played in the BNZ U-16 (Federal Youth Center).

The 1.78 m tall central midfielder made his Bundesliga debut in the 2001/02 season under start coach Ivica Osim . He was only a reserve player in the fighting team and mainly gained match practice with the amateurs as captain. In the 2002 Supercup final he was substituted on for Arnold Wetl and played the last 40 minutes.

In the 2002/03 season took place in Graz for the release of Ivica Osim . The new coach Franco Foda knew Kienzl from his time with the amateurs. In that year he completed his military service with the Austrian Armed Forces . Therefore, he could not complete all training units of the fighting team and so he only made three appearances in the Bundesliga. Nevertheless, Kienzl made his debut in an international competition when he came on in the 80th minute for Alain Masudi in a 5-2 draw against FC Livingston .

In the 2003/04 season he scored his first goals against SV Mattersburg and SK Rapid Vienna . But due to some injuries he did not manage to fight for a regular place in the Bundesliga team. He only managed to do this in the 2007/08 season .

A highlight during the 2007/08 season was his goal in the 15th round against FC Red Bull Salzburg , which he scored with an overhead kick. This hit was voted Goal of the Month for October and was voted Goal of the Year at the end of the season .

In the 2008/09 season Mario Kienzl was determined by coach Franco Foda as the second captain behind Mario Haas . He also managed to score 2-0 in the UI Cup game against FK Schachzjor Salihorsk in the opening game of the new season .

In late September 2008, the midfielder extended his contract with Sturm Graz ahead to 2011. In February 2009 Kienzl was first-team boss ÖFB by the then Karel Bruckner for the friendly international against Sweden in the national team convened. In this game he was substituted on for Paul Scharner in the 82nd minute, making his international debut.

In 2010/11 he was Austrian champion with Sturm Graz. In July 2011 he was signed by FC Vaduz from the Challenge League and released after a year. After several months without a club, he withdrew from professional sport and appeared in the Styrian West Lower League from the beginning of 2013 for SV Lannach . After almost half a year, he also broke this commitment and largely withdrew from active football. With the so-called GC Odörfer , a purely hobby team, Kienzl took part as team leader in the so-called Stammtischcup in 2015 .

As early as July 2013, he began training youth teams at FC Kalsdorf, before being promoted to assistant coach under Christian Peintinger , whom he knew from his days at SK Sturm Graz, in the summer of 2014 . After Peintinger left as Adi Hütter's assistant coach at BSC Young Boys in the top Swiss football league in September 2015, Mario Kienzl briefly took over the Kalsdorf coaching position. After a few games under Kienzl's leadership, a new coach for the third division team was found in Michael Zisser . Under Zisser, he then acted again as an assistant trainer before he retired in summer 2016 and only reappeared as Zisser's assistant from the beginning of 2017. He then worked in this position until summer 2017, before he was appointed assistant coach of the Sturm amateurs by Joachim Standfest after taking over the amateur team of SK Sturm Graz , where he worked on his goalkeeping coach Roland Goriupp , among other things .

After the end of his professional career, he temporarily appeared for the radio station Antenne Steiermark .
