Markus Schmidt (born October 23, 1968 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian luge athlete who competed with Gerhard Gleirscher in both a single and double-seater . He took part in the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994 and won a bronze medal. During his active time he started for SV Igls.

Career

Luge rider

In 1984 he and his two-seater partner Robert Manzenreiter took part in the 1984 Junior World Championships in Bludenz . Behind the Soviet team and the team from the GDR, they won the bronze medal.

At the 1991 World Luge Championships in Winterberg , he won the silver medal in the team competition. At the 1992 European Championships in Winterberg, he won the silver medal with the Austrian relay. Together with Gerhard Gleirscher, he qualified for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France , in both single and double seats . In the single-seater competition, he won the bronze medal behind the German Georg Hackl and his teammate Markus Prock . Together with Gerhard Gleirscher, he only took seventh place in the two-seater.

In the 1993/1994 season he was able to win his only single World Cup victory. At the World Cup race in Innsbruck-Igls , he won the race in a single-seater. He also won the bronze medal in the relay competition at the 1994 European Championships in Koenigssee . For the Olympic Winter Games in 1994 he qualified in the single seater and was nominated by the Austrian Olympic Committee for the Winter Games in Lillehammer . He finished the single-seater competition in tenth place.

At the European Championships in Sigulda in 1996 , he won the bronze medal behind Jens Müller and Albert Michailowitsch Demtschenko in the single-seater, and in the team competition he won the silver medal together with the Austrian team. At the 1996 World Championships in Altenberg , he and his teammates won the gold medal in the team competition.

Sports official

He is the Vice President of the Austrian Luge Association and is responsible for the artificial tracks. He is also a member of the jury of the Fédération Internationale de Luge de Course .
