Martin Kotthaus

Martin Kotthaus (born May 13, 1962 in Burscheid ) is a German diplomat . He has been the German ambassador to Belgium since September 2018 . Before that, he was, among other things, head of the European department in the Foreign Office from 2014 to 2018 , spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Finance from 2011 to 2014 and spokesman for the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union from 2005 to 2011 .

Life

Kotthaus, who had lived with his parents and brother in different countries as a child, did his basic military service after graduating from high school in Velbert in 1981 and began studying law in Münster and Geneva (Switzerland) in 1982 , which he received in 1989 with the first state examination in 1989 at the Hamm Higher Regional Court . After his legal clerkship at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court , he passed the second state examination in 1992. 1996/97 he studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford / Somerville ( Massachusetts , USA)

Kotthaus is married and has two children.

career

In 1993 he began his career in the State Chancellery of Brandenburg in Potsdam in the field of "European Politics" and in the same year moved to the Foreign Office . In 1994 he was sent to the Embassy in Luanda ( Angola ) as permanent representative . After studying at the Fletcher School in 1996/97, he moved to the embassy in Washington ( USA) as press spokesman in 1997 .

In 1999 he moved to the Gruner + Jahr publishing house in Hamburg , where he became Executive Vice President Corporate Communications and Investor Relations in 2000.

In 2003 he returned to the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin and became head of the work unit “Germany's Image Abroad”. In 2005 he moved to Brussels ( Belgium ), where he was Head of Press at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union from 2006 to 2011 , also during the German EU Presidency in 2007. From 2011 to 2014 he was Head of Communication and Spokesman for Minister Wolfgang Schäuble in the Federal Ministry of Finance in Berlin (Germany), before he took over the management of the European Department in the Foreign Office in Berlin from 2014 to 2018 under Federal Foreign Ministers Frank Walter Steinmeier , Sigmar Gabriel and Heiko Maas .

In September 2018 he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Belgium in Brussels .
