Martin Wolff (sculptor)
Martin Wolff (born May 19, 1852 in Berlin ; † October 6, 1919 there ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Martin Wolff was the only son of the sculptor Albert Wolff from Mecklenburg-Strelitz . 1871–1875 he studied in the plaster class at the Berlin Art Academy with Eduard Daege . Subsequent study trips took him to Vienna and Italy. Further training in the father's studio followed. The “ Theseus ” group modeled in 1880 brought him a Paris scholarship as a notable success.
From 1882–1883 Martin Wolff lived and worked in Rome . After his return, he set up his own studio in Von-der-Heydt-Strasse 6 in Berlin. In the late 1890s, a lack of commissions put him in economic distress, which was only overcome with the order for Group 21 on Siegesallee . This work also earned him the award of the Prussian Order of the Crown, IV class. In 1898 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition . On the occasion of the unveiling of the monument to Caspard de Coligny on October 19, 1912 in Wilhelmshaven , Wolff received the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle III as the last major award from Kaiser Wilhelm II . Class awarded.
In 1900 the sculptor Werner Begas modeled a bust of Martin Wolff.
power
The artistic authority of his father was decisive for the work of Martin Wolff in the tradition of the academic direction oriented towards antiquity , from which he could never break away.
