Martinikirche (Magdeburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Martinikirche was a church in Neustadt near Magdeburg . It was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours .

This parish church, also known locally as the Martens Church, existed as early as 1300 . The construction became necessary when Archbishop Wilbrand had a new city wall built for Magdeburg in the middle of the 13th century at the level of the Krökentor towards the Elbe . The area north of the city wall originally belonged to the district of the Sankt-Jakobi-Kirche Magdeburg , but should now be assigned to the Neustadt and the local Sankt-Nicolai-Kirche . The residents of the area who resisted this got their own church.

The church is said to have belonged to the village of Frohse , which was located north of Magdeburg's old town on the Elbe, but was united with Neustadt in 1373.

The church building was located near the Elbe in the immediate vicinity of the Agnetenkloster . Later there was a union with the monastery. The church existed until around 1550. Its importance for Neustadt is likely to have been minor, since only a few sources can be found for the church.

Even later, the area south of the monastery was referred to as Martini- or Märtenskirchof . Until 1811, part of the old churchyard served as a burial place.

In 1812 the French occupation forces demolished most of the old town and the Agnetenkloster in order to build fortifications for the Magdeburg fortress . During the construction work for the fortifications, the foundations of the former Martini church were found.

From 1898 onwards, the Protestant Martinskirche was built elsewhere in the Old New Town , which in a certain sense resumed the name tradition, even if it was not dedicated to Martin von Tours but to Martin Luther .
