geology

One of the "red tips".

Together with the Arpille , the Aiguilles Rouges form the Aiguilles Rouges / Arpille massif, one of the four central massifs of the Swiss Alps . The name means “red tips” in German and is derived from the characteristic color, which is based on gneiss containing iron oxide . Otherwise it consists of metamorphic rocks . In contrast to the “sister massif” on the other side of the Arve, the Mont-Blanc group , there is little granite .

The so-called blood stone, a red boulder in Ins in the Swiss canton of Bern, probably comes from the Aiguilles Rouges.

On the southwest side of the Aiguilles Rouges there is a rich flora. Above 2,000 meters, the climate is alpine . On the north-western side there is less vegetation because of the lower solar radiation. The national nature reserve "Aiguilles Rouges" has been located on part of the Aiguilles rouges since 1974. The "Association for the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserves" is committed to protecting the natural environment.

The eastern Aiguilles Rouges are particularly popular with hikers because of their good views of Mont Blanc . The east side of the Brevent is accessible from Chamonix as a ski area .

Literature and film

The Aiguilles Rouges can be found in the autobiographical work of the mountain writer Oskar Erich Meyer .

According to his fictional biography, the parents of secret agent James Bond died in a mountain accident in the Aiguilles Rouges near Chamonix when he was eleven years old. The mountain range is also mentioned in the novel With Love from Moscow .

The French feature film Les aiguilles rouges from 2006 is set in the Aiguilles Rouges , in which a group of eight boy scouts are punished by having to climb the Brevent .
