chronology
- Master plan Roots to Grow

Masterplan is the debut album by Swiss singer Stefanie Heinzmann from 2008.

As singles were My Man Is a Mean Man , Like a Bullet and Revolution decoupled. The album includes a cover version of Only So Much Oil in the Ground by Tower of Power and the track XTAL, written with her brother Claudio Heinzmann . The album was recorded in 2008 at Numarek Studios in Berlin . It achieved gold and platinum status in Switzerland and platinum status in Germany .

Musical classification

The album is classified into the genres of pop , soul , jazz and funk . Only So Much Oil in the Ground comes from the band Tower of Power , which is classified into the genres of funk and soul. The rest of the music is reminiscent of Jamiroquai in places , such as B. the song If I Don't Love You Now .

Heinzmann initially feared that she would have to make music prescribed by the producers. However, she was finally able to have a say in which songs were chosen for the album and give each song a personal touch. She thinks If I Don't Love You Now is the most successful song on the album. She found Best Thing You Ever Did to be the most difficult song to play .

content

Most of the songs on the album have to do with describing problematic love relationships. With My Man Is a Mean Man is about a problematic friend, and Like a Bullet the singer sings of himself as rather difficult to conquering person. In If I Do not Love You Now it comes to the emotional tension during a separation time to a lover. Five songs deal with the dissolution of love relationships. These are Can't Get You Out of My System, I Betcha She Doesn't Feel It, Don't Call This Love, Best Thing You Ever Did and Painfully Easy . The album also features songs that address personal freedom, the will to change and the will to take life into your own hands. These are Masterplan, Revolution, Free Love, Do Your Thing and the rather melancholy XTAL . The cover song Only So Much Oil in the Ground is a political song from the 1970s that raised awareness of the scarcity of non-renewable resources.

  • Master plan - The opener is an up-tempo song. Lyrically, it's about someone doing their own thing in their life. The song was composed in the soul style of the 1960s and has percussion and drums , as well as stick and wind instruments as the dominant instruments . A song with a live character is created with the background singers.
  • My Man Is a Mean Man is the first released single from the album. The title translates as "My husband is a mean man". The protagonist celebrates her life partner as a man who does what he wants very independently. He comes and goes when he wants without telling her anything. He goes out alone in the evening to drink and only comes home very early in the morning. Although they practically only maintain a telephone relationship, she still loves her husband and defends him against other voices, such as B. that of her mother. This is a melodic, soul influenced pop song with a backing choir. It was written by the “TEN production” team.
  • Like a Bullet is the second single. The song's influences date back to the 1970s. Musically this song belongs to soul jazz and has blues and funk elements.
  • Can't Get You Out of My System is a song about a breakup process from a friend. The man has treated the protagonist badly, and yet she cannot completely break away from him. The main component in the groovy track is the interaction with the background singers Kim Sanders and Vanessa Mason.
  • I Betcha She Doesn't Feel It - The song is about the protagonist being abandoned by her boyfriend and replaced by a younger one. It is a lamentation for reasons why the relationship had to fail this way. Heinzmann chose this song because she has a friend who has experienced something similar. Is a song with a sustaining groove and most of the jazz parts of the entire album.
  • Only so Much Oil in the Ground is a cover version of the song by the San Francisco Bay Area band Tower of Power on the album Urban Renewal , which was released in 1974 by Warner Brothers . The song is a musical adaptation of the publication The Limits of Growth in 1972 by the Club of Rome , which among other things pointed to the limits of oil production and thus opened a debate about the problem of the unrestricted consumption of non-renewable raw materials. Stefanie Heinzmann sang this song during the SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD competition .
  • Don't Call This Love is a Motown- style ballad . Lyrically it is very similar to I Betcha She Doesn't Feel it . The song is melancholy and intense and has rock elements.
  • Revolution is a happy and lively up-tempo song. Textually he describes a utopia of a better world and a better society. It has a polyphonic refrain and is reminiscent of Natasha Bedingfield .
  • Free Love - Musically it is a very rocking song with electric guitar and drums, but also wind instruments such as timpani and trumpets . It describes the freedom to be able to do what you want and to be able to love who you want without having to be connected to sexuality.
  • If I Don't Love You Now is a mid-tempo disco song with Jamiroquai influences. Lyrically it is a love song with the statement that the protagonist dies of tension if she is not allowed to love the desired person immediately. It is simply structured musically and has a harmonic refrain.
  • Painfully Easy is a moody ballad and the second Motown-style song.
  • Best Thing You Ever Did - Is also about a breakup. What the song says means that the best thing her ex boyfriend ever did to her was leaving.
  • Do Your Thing - This song is about creating your own life the way you want it and not being put off. Everyone should do their thing as well as they can.
  • XTAL - In the personal, melancholy piece that she wrote together with her brother, she describes the little things in life that are fun, but which are often done far too rarely. They are described as moments that slip through your fingers. First and foremost, it is about childhood moments of happiness, and as you get older you find that they have been lost.

The cover shows a photograph by Heinzmann, taken by photographer Michael Zargarinejad. She is sitting on a chair, has black painted fingernails, and wears a leather bracelet and a ring. The red Adidas shoes were her trademark during SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD . The artwork of the album comes from the music design company Reinsberg from Berlin.

Editions

In November the Ltd. Deluxe Edt. released. It contains five bonus tracks as well as a DVD with the approx. 58 minute long documentation Masterplan - The Movie , which shows the course of Heinzmann's career so far, a picture gallery and the video clips for the singles.

Single releases

The first single that was presented as part of the casting show was a single from all finalists from SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD, on which their first song, which was written by Markus Sepehrmanesh, Tommy Tysper, Pauline Olofsson, My Man Is a Mean Man . It was created during the casting show and was later released again separately. It came first in the charts in Switzerland. The song was the 11th most successful single of 2008 in Germany and was awarded gold for a sale of 150,000 records.

This was followed by the second single Like a Bullet . This single included two previously unreleased bonus tracks, Superstition and I Wrote the Book. This single also includes the instrumental version of the song and a video documentation of the album Masterplan . The song was later covered together with the song Masterplan by the Canadian singer Eva Avila for her second album.

The third release was the song Revolution . The single was released on August 1st, 2008 and is only available as a 2-track edition without a bonus track. After a rather disappointing course in the German charts, a cover of the song of the same name by the band Metallica was released in October 2008 as part of the “German Tribute to Metallica” project with The Unforgiven .

reception

criticism

The album was recorded very differently. For the Laut.de e-zine , the record is rather boring and ordinary. The only song that was halfway convincing is XTAL . For laut.de, the reason for this bad criticism is not the singer's ability, but rather the producers are responsible: “Otherwise no outbreak, no rebellion against the instrumentals and lyrics written by the Swedish producer duo. So even as the winner of SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD you are not safe from mainstream pop and boredom. "

For Sascha Baur on musicbeat.de, "Indeed (...) the debut album of the young Swiss woman can be described as very successful and musically hits like a bomb."
