Matthew Olawale Olosunde (born March 7, 1998 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American football player on the position of defensive player . Since summer 2019 he has been under contract with Rotherham United with games in the EFL League One , the third highest English football league.

Club career

Career start at home

Matthew Olosunde was born on March 7, 1998 to Peter and Winnie Olosunde in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Trenton , the capital of New Jersey , about an hour's drive away . Here he also began his career as a football player and as such was a member of the Princeton Football Club from the neighboring city of Princeton from 2005 to 2012 . There he was mainly used under the former Bulgarian professional player Stojan Pumpalow . In his childhood and youth he was also a beneficiary of the non-profit organization Mooch Soccer , which is dedicated to the football player and coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick , who died at an early age . While playing at Princeton in the spring and fall, he appeared at Mooch Soccer in the summer and winter.

In the university town, he went through all youth leagues and still acted as a striker before he was accepted into the academy of the major league soccer franchise New York Red Bulls in 2012. At the New York Red Bulls Academy , Olosunde was mostly used on the right wing and represented the U-16 and U-18 teams in the franchise. Furthermore, he made his debut on 16 August 2014 that at that time in the then third-tier United Soccer League acting (USL) Academy team when he at a 1: 0 victory over the Wilmington Hammerheads after 71 minutes for Kyle Zajec on came the lawn. Transfer to Manchester United

In January 2016, Olosundes was then announced to join the youth team at the Premier League club Manchester United . It was also reported that the English had promised him online courses at the University of Oxford to persuade him to move to England. After the international approval, the official move to Manchester took place on March 11, 2016 , where he was initially used in the U-18 team of the club. Shortly thereafter, he made the jump into the U-21 squad, in which he was only on the bench and was not used. In the following season 2016/17 he made it to the reserve team and appeared for them in 18 championship games of the Premier League 2 , previously known as the U21 Premier League . The youth of Manchester United, who had emerged as champions three times in the past four seasons, ended the season in sixth place in the division 1 table .

In addition to these missions, he has already traveled with the professional team in several games and was part of the extended squad. In April 2017, he was nominated for the club's Goal of the Month award after single -handedly scoring against Real Salt Lake in the Dallas Cup , a friendly tournament . In 2017/18 the Nigerian- born Olosunde was mainly part of the reserve team, but was often brought into the professional squad. As the last place in Division 1 , the reserve team was relegated to Division 2 at the end of the season . He did not make the breakthrough in the professional team this season either. Even in the following season 2018/19 Olosundes missed out on even the reserve team. It was only in the 16th round that he sat unused on the bench for the first time and was only used by his coach Ricky Sbragia in round 17 . By the end of the season, when it brought the team to sixth place in Division 2 , he was then used in four of the remaining five championship games of the Manchester United reserves. However, the right-back was unable to make a breakthrough into the professional team this season, which ultimately ended in Olosunde's dismissal in June 2019.

Moved to Rotherham United in EFL League One

Just a month later, Olosundes' move to EFL Championship relegated Rotherham United , with whom he signed a two-year deal, was announced. There he was used by long-time Rotherham player and current trainer Paul Warne as a regular player in the right defensive position from the beginning of the 2019/20 season , but was also used occasionally in the right midfield. He made his league debut on August 3, 2019 in the first round match against AFC Wimbledon , when he was on the field for the full game. To date (as of January 8, 2020) Olosunde has played in 23 of the 24 league games to date and has made three assists so far. Furthermore, he was used in two games of his team in the EFL Trophy 2019/20 and brought it to as many appearances in the EFL Cup 2019/20 , in which Rotherham United was defeated in the second round of the second division Sheffield Wednesday with 0: 1 and thus eliminated from the competition. In the 2019/20 FA Cup , Rotherham United made it to the third round and was eliminated on January 4, 2020 with 2: 3 against the second division club Hull City . Olosunde played in all three games and provided an assist in the 3-2 defeat by Hull City. With the team, he currently ranks second in the league (as of January 8, 2020) behind the Wycombe Wanderers and has been tried by Paul Warne as a left-back or left midfield since the end of 2019.

National team career

In 2012 Olosunde gained his first experience in the US U-15 national team , of which he was still a member the following year. In 2013 he made it to his first appearances in the United States ' U-17 national team , although this was still limited this year. By 2014 at the latest, he became their regular player and started from the beginning in 16 of 19 appearances this year. He also contributed two assists this year. Olosunde made eight other missions in the following year 2015, when he took part in the U-17 World Cup in Chile in 2015 . With the Americans, he was already defeated in the group phase as the last of Group A. On January 2, 2016 Olosundes was called up to the US U-20 selection . By March 2016, U-20 coach Tab Ramos used him in three international matches; after that it was no longer considered. In May 2018, he was called up for the first time in the senior national team of his home country , for which he made his debut on May 28, 2018 in a friendly international game against Bolivia in a friendly 3-0 win when he hit the pitch for captain Eric Lichaj in the 74th minute came. Under national coach Dave Sarachan , six players made their A-team debut that evening. After Olosunde had become increasingly quiet again in the following months, Jason Kreis brought him to the US U-23 national team for two international matches in March 2019 . In the two games against Egypt and the Netherlands in San Pedro del Pinatar in Spain , he completed the first half against the Egyptians and sat on the bench unused in the second encounter.
