Matthias Bätzel
Matthias Bätzel (* 1966 in Weimar ) is a German jazz organist.
Live and act
Matthias Bätzel studied violin and piano at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar from 1983 to 1989 . Even in the GDR era, he was based on the music of the rock group Deep Purple ; Later models were the organ-heavy blues by Freddie King , the Polish organist Wojciech Karolak and his French counterpart Eddy Louiss . Other musical role models are the jazz organists Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff . Bätzel made his first appearances in 1990 with the alto saxophonist Fiete Felsch and the drummer Torsten Zwingenberger . It wasn't until 1992 that he began to play the organ . In 1994 the group Grooveyard was founded with drummer Michael Keul and guitarist Michael Arlt . Eventually the band developed into the Matthias Bätzel Trio (since 1998). The Regensburg guitarist Helmut Kagerer later joined Arlt . The current line-up of the Matthias Bätzel Trio includes drummer Heiko Jung and bassist Matthias Eichhorn .
From 1990 to 1993 Bätzel was a lecturer in jazz piano at the Weimar University of Music. He regularly works as a guest lecturer at jazz workshops and took on a teaching position for jazz piano at the Dresden Music Academy in 2002 and a teaching position for jazz ensemble at the Weimar University of Music in 2006. Since 2007 Matthias Bätzel has been professor for jazz piano and Hammond organ at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden . On Bätzel's initiative, the Dresden University of Music set up a postgraduate course in Hammond B3 organ in the jazz / rock / pop department. He took part in numerous festivals, radio, TV and CD productions, u. a. with Carla Bley , Red Holloway , Clark Terry , Nils Landgren , Charly Antolini , Wolfgang Schlüter , Roman Schwaller , Dusko Goykovich , Mack Goldsbury , Herb Robertson , Ed Kröger , Toots Thielemans , Veronika Fischer and Manfred Krug . With the latter, there was 2015 the gold record for the album "Chosen" released the year before.
