Matthias Eichhorn

Matthias “Matze” Eichhorn (* 1978 ) is a German musician ( double bass , electric bass ) who is active in jazz , but also in new music . He continues to lead several handbell choirs .

Live and act

Eichhorn, whose mother is a church musician, first received piano lessons ; then he learned the cello and organ and trained as a C church musician (1996–98). Only then did he switch to bass. He took part in numerous competitions for young talent and was awarded prizes at Jugend musiziert , Jugend jazz , the Leipzig Jazz Festival, the Bad Hersfeld Jazz Competition and the Straubing Jazz Festival. In 1998 he began to study technical physics at the TU Ilmenau ; In 2001 he broke off his studies in order to study jazz double bass and electric bass at the Liszt School of Music Weimar until 2006 . In 2010 he won third prize at the international jazz double bass competition BASS2010.

Eichhorn, who lives in Weimar, works as a freelance musician. As a member of the ensembles of Lorenzo Frizzera , Uschi Brüning , Oliver Leicht and Bertram Burkert , he was also involved in recordings. He has given concerts with Matthias Bätzel , Joey DeFrancesco , Richie Beirach , Eddie Daniels , Jeff Cascaro , Frank Möbus , Werner Neumann , Simone Kermes , Bill Ramsey and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky ; he was also on tour with Clueso .

Since 2006 he has also directed the Gotha handbell choir founded by his mother, and the Weimar handbell choir since 2012. He has also worked as a bassist, cellist or co-producer on records for Clueso, Ryo , Norman Sinn and Max Prosa . He is also involved in productions of new music, for example with the MDR symphony orchestra .

Eichhorn plays in a wide variety of band projects in a wide variety of genres, from duo to big band and the STÜBAphilharmonie , in theater and drama music, musicals and productions of new (classical) music. He has been teaching since 2011 with a teaching position at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig , and since 2017 also at the "Franz Liszt" University of Music in Weimar.

Eichhorn also wrote radio play music, for example for the radio play The Wizard of Oz (2016). He is a member of the Presidium of the State Music Council of Thuringia .
