Maximilian Emanuel von Württemberg-Winnental
Maximilian Emanuel von Württemberg-Winnental (born February 27, 1689 in Stuttgart , † September 25, 1709 in Dubno ) was a prince from the house of Württemberg-Winnental and lifesaver of the Swedish King Karl XII.
His parents were Field Marshal Friedrich Karl von Württemberg-Winnental (1652–1698) and his wife Eleonore Juliane von Brandenburg-Ansbach (1663–1724).
Life
The prince left the court at the age of 14 to join the army of Charles XII. who waged war in Poland in 1703. In the army he was quickly known as "lillprinsen" (German: the Little Prince ). His first battle was the Battle of Pułtusk on April 21, 1703 . He fought in the conquest of Thorn , Elbing and Lemberg . In the course of the campaign he saved Karl XII. while crossing a river from drowning, which gave him the lifelong friendship of Charles XII. secured. After the peace treaty of 1706 , he returned briefly to Stuttgart in 1707, to rejoin Karl XII after only five weeks. to set out, who now invaded Russia.
On June 18, 1708 he suffered a gunshot wound while crossing the Beresina . Although his wound had not yet healed, he fought in the Battle of Golovchin (July 4, 1708). A little later he became a colonel in the Buchwald dragoon regiment.
In the Battle of Poltava , in which he fought in the cavalry on the left wing, the Swedish army capitulated and Maximilian was also captured. But he was soon released. On the way back to Württemberg he died of an illness in Dubno , Volhynia (today: Ukraine ). Charles XII. lamented losing a good friend. His body was buried first in Krakow and then in the family crypt in the church of Pitschen in Upper Silesia. His grave monument was moved to the old castle in 1887.
On his travels he was accompanied by the preacher Johann Wendelin Bardili (1675–1740), a grandson of Carl Bardili . He wrote a book about his trip with the prince: Des Weyland durchl. Printzens Maximilian Emanuels, Hertzogs in Würtemberg Reisen und Campagnen , Stuttgart 1730.
