Maximilian Werner (politician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maximilian Werner (born June 18, 1815 in Appenweier , † January 20, 1875 in Offenburg ) was a Baden politician. He was a staunch democrat and was one of the pioneers of the revolution in Baden.

Life

Werner studied law in Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau from 1836 to 1840 and was a member of the Corps Suevia Freiburg . He then worked as a lawyer in Oberkirch , Offenburg and Birsfelden ( Switzerland ), among others .

From 1848 to 1849 he was a city councilor in Oberkirch and, as successor to Gustav Rées, he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly , where he belonged to the Left ( Donnersberg faction ) and, after its dissolution, to the Central March Association . He took part in all uprisings of the Baden Revolution in 1848/1849 , and in June 1849 he was a member of the provisional government as Minister of War. After the collapse of the Murgtallinie, he tried unsuccessfully together with Amand Goegg and Franz Sigel to reorganize the resistance against the Prussian intervention army in the Seekreis . Together with the remnants of the Baden revolutionary troops, he crossed the Swiss border near Konstanz on July 11, 1849 and asked for asylum.

He lived in Birsfelden until 1850 . He came to the United States of America via France . The court court of Baden in Bruchsal sentenced him to life imprisonment for high treason on April 25, 1850 ; the higher court in Mannheim upheld the judgment on November 30, 1850. He returned from America after the amnesty announced in 1862. From 1869 to 1874 he worked as a lawyer in Offenburg again.

In contrast to other revolutionary leaders, Werner did not leave any memoirs or other writings and was long considered lost abroad. In this respect, his role in the Baden Revolution went unnoticed for a long time, until intensive research by the family in the 1990s enabled a more detailed description of his work and fate.
