Maximilian von Pohl

Maximilian Pohl , since 1914 Ritter von Pohl (born April 15, 1893 in Munich , † July 26, 1951 in Pöcking ) was a German officer , most recently General of the Aviators and Commanding General of the Air Force in Central Italy during World War II .

Life

Maximilian was the son of the bookseller and councilor Eduard Pohl and his wife Maria, née Schmidt.

After graduating from the humanistic Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , Pohl joined the 7th field artillery regiment "Prinzregent Luitpold" of the Bavarian Army as a gunner on October 1, 1912 . On March 20, 1913 he was made ensign there and promoted to lieutenant with the outbreak of World War I. For his services he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Max Joseph Order by the Bavarian King on August 28, 1914 and from this point on he was allowed to call himself Knight of Pohl due to the personal nobility associated with it. On December 14, 1917, he was promoted to lieutenant and served as chief of the 3rd and later the 7th battery of his regular regiment.

After the war, Pohl served from April 13, 1919 in the " Freikorps Epp ", which was accepted into the Reichswehr . In the Reichswehr he belonged to the 7th (Bavarian) Artillery Regiment . On June 1, 1924, he was promoted to captain . After joining the Air Force, he became a lieutenant colonel on April 1, 1935 , and was promoted to colonel on April 20, 1936 . Later he was head of the training department in the Reich Ministry of Aviation . In 1939 he became major general .

During the Second World War he became lieutenant general on August 1, 1940 and was military attaché of the Air Force in Rome until July 30, 1943 . During this time he was promoted to General der Flieger on February 1, 1942. From September 1943 to January 1945 Pohl was Commanding General of the German Air Force at the High Command of the Royal Italian Air Force.

From May 2, 1945 to 1947 he was a US prisoner of war . From 1950 until his death, Pohl was managing director of the newly renamed Bavarian Publishers and Booksellers Association .
