Maximilian Freiherr von Speidel (born September 13, 1856 in Munich ; † February 24, 1943 ibid) was a Bavarian cavalry general and minister of state.

Life

origin

He was the son of Edmund Freiherr von Speidel and his wife Louise, née Edle von Krempelhuber. His father was Lieutenant General and Court Marshal of Prince Luitpold of Bavaria.

Military career

Speidel graduated from the pagerie and a humanistic grammar school . Then he joined the 4th Chevaulegers Regiment "King" of the Bavarian Army in 1874 as a porter ensign . After attending the military school in Munich, he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in 1876 . From 1881 to 1884 Speidel graduated from the War Academy , which pronounced him qualification for the higher adjutantage. As travel marshal, Speidel accompanied Princess Therese of Bavaria on her trip to Brazil in 1888 .

In the further course of his military career, Speidel was Lieutenant General from December 4, 1909 to December 14, 1911, commander of the 2nd division in Augsburg . He was then put up for disposition , conferring the character of general of the cavalry .

Reactivated at the beginning of the First World War , Speidel was given command of the newly established 6th Reserve Division on October 30, 1914 . He led this in the 4th Army until November 15, 1914 as a reserve during the Battle of Flanders .

From November 26, 1916 to January 21, 1919 Speidel was State Councilor in the State Ministry for Military Affairs . Shortly before the end of the war on November 10, 1918, Speidel tried in vain with Otto von Dandl King Ludwig III. to persuade the officers to release their oath of arms . However, the king had left his domicile at Wildenwart Castle prematurely because of the danger of the Soviet Revolution under Kurt Eisner . It was not until November 13, 1918 that the king released the Bavarian officials and soldiers from their oath of loyalty with the Anifer Declaration .

family

Speidel had married Anna Maria Karolina Countess von Arco auf Valley on April 16, 1884 in Munich. The marriage resulted in three sons and a daughter. Their son Hans (1886–1916) also struck a military career in the Bavarian Army. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Max Joseph Order for his services during the First World War and fell as a first lieutenant.
