In order to get married with her family, the author May Brennan interrupts her well-organized everyday life in New York and travels to her old home in Amman , Jordan . As soon as she arrives, she is immediately reminded why she prefers to live abroad: Her Catholic mother - appalled by May's engagement to the Muslim Ziad - tries to sabotage her relationship with voodoo rituals and the rest of the relatives threaten her with hellfire. Together with her chaotic sisters Yasmine and Dalia, May still throws himself into the wedding preparations. These come to a standstill when May meets the attractive travel guide Karim.
