action

Marietta wants a dog so badly . Instead she only has one “stupid” little brother named Tobias. Because he has an allergy to animal hair , no dog can live in the apartment. As is so often the case, she gets a stuffed dog for her ninth birthday. But even the “ninety-eighth” stuffed dog cannot satisfy their longing for a real dog. And then she also receives a strange stone from the family's African godchild.

Marietta's parents, Maria and Martin, are both socially and environmentally committed . Maria runs a trade, the proceeds of which go to children in Africa, while Martin works on a new ecological vehicle. Since Martin cares more about his work than his family, Marietta's parents occasionally argue.

In order to find each other again, the parents go on vacation alone. During this time, Grandma Gerda takes care of the children. The grandma doesn't like children, however. Alone with a grumpy grandma and an annoying little brother, Marietta gets angry. She crawls into her room and rereads the letter that the African godchild sent her with the gift. The letter is in English, so Marietta has some trouble translating the letter.

The stone is said to have magical powers . Marietta rubs the stone and wishes for a dog. Indeed, suddenly a dog is in the apartment. But where has her brother gone? Since the dog likes to look at chickens and also likes caramel candy, Marietta quickly realizes that the dog is really her brother, because her brother liked these things too. Marietta is happy. She has got rid of her "stupid" little brother and has a dog.

Marietta initially succeeds in deceiving her grandmother and her parents who have been away from home, so that everyone thinks that Tobias is with the other. Just a shame that everything will come out when her parents come back. And so she wants to reverse the spell as a test. But the reverse transformation does not work. Marietta needs advice from the African sponsored child, which is possible via e-mail . To translate her request, she goes to an antique shop run by an Englishman.

The dog causes some damage in the shop, so that Marietta has to raise € 250. Fortunately, the dog is discovered by a producer. The dog appears in an advertisement, so Marietta can get the money. The dog is so well received that he gets another contract for a series.

Grandma Gerda is delighted with that. Since she used to want to be an actress, but was prevented from doing so as a single mother by her child (Marietta's father), she thinks it is good to have at least one acting dog. Meanwhile, the answer to the e-mail has finally arrived: The magic stone only fulfills wishes that you want from the bottom of your heart. Since Marietta hadn't really wanted her brother back, it didn't work out. But when she's at home alone in the evening because grandma and the dog are in the studio until late, she realizes how lonely she is and how much she misses him. After that, she wants nothing more than that the whole family could be together again and so the transformation back works.

Tobias wakes up at night. His dearest wish has always been to get on television . But as a boy he never succeeded. And so, with the help of the magic stone, Tobias wishes to be a dog again. After the renewed transformation, the dog hides the stone.

When Marietta wakes up, she is desperate that Tobias is a dog again. And then the stone is also missing! To make matters worse, her parents are also coming back. They made up again during their vacation . So your luck would be perfect, but where is Tobias?

Of course, Marietta doesn't believe that Tobias has turned into a dog. In addition, the dog stayed in the studio at night . Your little brother all alone? Of course that doesn't work. So Marietta has to save him. She manages to outsmart the security guards in the studio and save the dog.

After Marietta explains to the dog that her parents miss Tobias so much, Tobias wants to be a boy again, brings her the magic stone, and the transformation back succeeds. Now the family is completely happy, so Marietta no longer needs a magic stone and sends it back to the African godchild.

criticism

film-dienst 23/2004: The story, told with witty dialogues and puns, maintains the balance between tension and humor. Carried by a playful ensemble, the film tells of parental and brotherly love without an educational finger.
