My blue bird flies is a German feature film by DEFA by Celino Bleiweiß based on the children's book Der Gute Stern des Janusz K. by Gisela Karau from 1972, which was freely written based on an authentic case.

action

A group of Polish boys is sent to a concentration camp and assigned to Robert, a German Kapo , chief of the construction team. Here they have to do the same heavy work as adults. One day Janusz meets his uncle Marian, who is also imprisoned in the same camp, who is already at the end of his strength due to the hard work and he remembers the beautiful days of his childhood. Again and again there are recordings from the time when Janusz and his uncle were still peacefully building a blue model airplane and let it fly.

Robert does everything to keep the young people alive and therefore suggests that the concentration camp commandant train them to be bricklayers so that they can be entrusted with easier physical tasks. The group of budding bricklayers is led by a German, a French and a Czech. But for the Poles every German is an opponent. It takes tent, effort, cunning, patience and courage to dissolve enmity and mistrust and to make the children understand the conditions and reasons for survival in the face of the constant attempts of the fascists to humiliate everyone.

In an important scene of the film, the camp commandant tells Kapo Robert that his son died at the front in Russia and that he is allowed to hang his photo on the wall. When Janusz comes to Roberts' barracks about a problem, he sees the picture with the son in uniform and tears it into many pieces. The SS finds the snippets and they turn it as if Robert had torn up the picture himself because he was angry that his son fought for the German Wehrmacht against the Russians. For this he is arrested . Now the young people are collecting bread for their savior and smuggling it into his cell, because they have realized what he has done for them.

production

The basis for the story was the life of the communist Robert Siewert , imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp , who as a construction team leader ensured that young Poles and Jews received a mason training and thus were spared the hardships of camp work. The film is also dedicated to this Robert Siewert.

My blue bird flies was filmed on ORWO-Color by the artistic work group “Berlin” . The world premiere took place on October 23, 1975 at the Berlin Kino International . The first broadcast on television in the GDR ran on July 23, 1979 in the first program.

criticism

Helmut Ullrich of the daily newspaper Neue Zeit found that the film seems to suffer from the indecision as to whether it is mainly intended for older children or for adults. A lot of things in the film are almost too complicated for the younger ones, and for the older ones it is too simplified and naive.

The lexicon of international films described the subject matter and message of the film worth considering as not being artistically rounded.
