action

Seventeen-year-old Ellen walks for fifty minutes with her classmates along the Cologne bank of the Rhine . Then the sports teacher ends the running training. But Ellen, who hasn't had breakfast, just keeps walking, ignoring the teacher's calls. She doesn't want to stop walking and is only stopped by a circulatory breakdown she suffers. She wakes up in the hospital. Her parents, who are having a serious marital crisis, stand by her bedside. Her mother, who is the presenter of the talk show “Learn to Live”, which deals with social problems, immediately came to visit her, even if she had to postpone a program. Ellen's father is the hospital doctor treating her. He will keep her in the clinic for two days for observation.

In the evening, Ellen is visited by a new classmate named Isa Schindler. She brings her flowers, greets her from the class and speaks to her. Isa, who watched Ellen's collapse, believes that Ellen wanted to run to death and is impressed. Isa's parents are not rich. Her mother is in a nursing home after a stroke. She no longer has any contact with her father. The eighteen-year-old lives with her sister, who works in a bar and whose private life consists only of parties. So Isa finds no rest at home. She has a sexual relationship with her teacher Wolf Kühn, who leads the theater group at the school in which she plays.

Ellen's math, English, and chemistry grades are poor, so it is not certain that she will make it through high school . Her father is not particularly strict on this issue, and Ellen shouldn't burden herself with it too much. You can live without a high school diploma. Other abilities of Ellen would be recognized by her parents without being asked. Back at school, Ellen is allowed to successfully copy off Isaiah's math exam. Ellen, who feels lonely in view of her constantly working parents, believes she has found a friend in Isa and goes dancing with her in the evening . Isa gives her sister, who is currently working in the dance bar , as the manager and her mother. After the two high school students have danced, Ellen takes the opportunity and questions Isa's assumption that she wanted to kill herself. Isa explains, however, that the wrong principle of life continues in the wrong principle of killing. Continuous running to complete exhaustion and thus cardiac arrest will work, even if it's crazy. But life is good, says Isa and kisses the confused Ellen on the mouth.

When Isa asked Ellen for three hundred euros for the driving test, she gave her the money. In addition, Ellen even buys a car with her money and meets David, who finances his medical studies with car sales. Isa, who has just passed the driving test, is not very enthusiastic about the car gift and does not accept it. Because rich Ellen, she argues, is buying poor Isa a car and, at the same time, Isa herself. Ellen sees her mother in close contact with a colleague in town. Ellen confronts her mother and accuses her of making a fool of herself. The mother answers with a slapstick . She also confronts her father and asks him whether the two would split up. But her father explains that things are not that easy and explains when Ellen's request that they still love each other.

Without a driver's license, Ellen drives her new car into a tree almost at a crossroads, seemingly almost killing herself. But similar to the running training before, it doesn't get that far, because the car just stays in front of the tree. The summoned Isa gets off a bus a little later at the nearby bus stop. In the following conversation, Isa distances herself from the friendship with Ellen. She admits that she lied about her mother and that a mother who is in psychiatry is just as painful as a mother who appears as a questionable psychologist on television. Ellen notifies the car dealer David, because the engine stutters. David comes and repairs the car by refueling it. The next day, Isa thought about the matter of the car. She helps Ellen again with an exam and accepts the car for it. Isa does not like Ellen's mother and she also does not agree with the gift. She doesn't believe in friendship that involves such an expensive gift. Shortly afterwards, Ellen's father separated from his mother and moved out.

Ellen, who does not know that Isa's mother will likely die soon, proposes to Isa to go on vacation with Isa's mother. Ellen and Isa soon go to the nursing home and bring Isa's mother out of the home without Isa's sister Marlene knowing about it. Isa also only explains to the concerned foster sister that they would go for an hour for a walk. But the trip takes longer. Isa drives the new car, her mother seems really happy in the passenger seat. They stay in a hotel. Isa pushes her mother around a little in the nearby area in the evening. After returning to the hotel room, she suddenly realizes that her mother died in bed. Distraught, she tells Ellen that they both killed her. Ellen is shocked and shocked. She hugs Isa and calls her father, who declares death. The mother is picked up in a hearse . Ellen drives back to town with her father. Isa finds a little peace and quiet to cry and also drives back to town in the new car. Ellen is also present at the funeral service. But when Ellen Isa wants to express her condolences, she simply runs away. She blames Ellen for her mother's death because the matter had a system. It was the doctor's daughter's idea to go on the trip. She must have known that the mother would not survive this. She also suspects that Ellen will probably kill her next. Marlene admonishes Isa that she should leave Ellen alone.

Isa's sister does not come to the premiere of the play in which Isa is supposed to play a leading role. But Ellen goes to the performance, but finds out that Isa is not playing. The theater teacher Kühn sent her home because she was drunk. Ellen visits the drunk Isa at home and confronts her about what she said at the funeral. Such things cannot be taken seriously. In addition, it was she who visited her in the hospital and wanted to make friends with her. Ellen asks her directly if she's sick or if she's looking for someone to make fun of. Isa immediately replies that she should be honest with herself, that she is not her friend. Ellen is actually looking for someone to take care of her. The dispute is unsolved, but Isa and Ellen leave and go to a school party. The teacher Kühn is also there. Kühn wants to break off the relationship with Isa and explains this to her again in conversation. Ellen, who has gotten very drunk in the meantime, gets into the car. Isa tells her that Kühn has left her and encourages the drunk to run the car over Kühn who is standing in the parking lot. Ellen sped off with the car, but turned the steering wheel just before Kühn, who quickly took a step to the side. Isa goes to Kühn, talks to him, describes the incident as a game and asks him not to break off the relationship with her. Kühn doesn't get involved and calls her crazy. Meanwhile, Ellen has run away.

The next morning, Ellen Isa meets her parents. Isa tells her that she was expelled from school for alcohol abuse , not for manslaughter , as was to be expected. Isa also told her parents that they both want to go to Hamburg to do their Abitur. Ellen's parents are not enthusiastic about the Hamburg plans. Ellen goes to David and tells him about the events and that doctors have been common in her family for generations. She suspects that this is one of the reasons why her mother unconsciously chose her father, a doctor. David casually declares that he does not want to marry her and shows understanding for her. The following night the two sleep together. The next morning she meets Isa again, who explains to her that she has moved out with her sister. She speaks of the mutual friendship and asks Ellen for accommodation to stay overnight. Ellen helps her find a place to stay with her father, who recently moved out.

Ellen is approached by a classmate. The teacher Hagen, who took over the lessons from Kühn, who left school, would have said that Ellen was only temporarily ill. Ellen realizes that Isa has tricked her and goes to her father's apartment.

Ellen's father, who is only wearing long trousers, opens the door. He calls Isa, who is only clothed in a towel. She throws the car key to Ellen and says that she should forget Hamburg. Ellen storms away. The irritated father calls after her that it is not what she suspects. The father turns to Isa and thinks she is playing a dirty game. Ellen gets in the car and starts the engine. Isa steps outside the door and faces the street with a provocative look. Ellen races up to her and hits her. The ambulance is called. The injured Isa is transported away. Ellen's father speaks to the police, who assume it was an accident. Ellen's father gets into his daughter's car and tells her this. Ellen, who watches the ambulance, tells him it wasn't an accident.

criticism

In particular, Ellen's last statement does not give a clear answer to the question of who the bad friend was to whom, or what triggered the bad events. So when the film was repeated, Hörzu wrote : “[...] the two young women [develop] an unhealthy relationship of dependency. Isa apparently has a problem with real closeness [...] The striking (and misleading) title is superfluous, as is the melodramatic resolution. Otherwise, this multi-layered story of a complicated friendship can only be recommended. ”The film was classified as“ successful ”by Hörzu and commented on with the words“ [The film is] kept in dreary pictures, [and] played excellently ”.

Christian Buß wrote in 2007 on Spiegel Online : “What happens between the two adolescents, how they cultivate their strategic emotional alliance, is basically just the cruelly distorted imitation of the relationship organization that they perceive in adults. [...] The fact that the young souls do not appear here as sacrificial lambs despite all the humiliations and deformations, is of course also due to the two grandiose leading actresses: the always convincing Anna Maria Mühe varies her role from the artificial suicide elegy "What is the use of love in Thoughts ”, and Alice Dwyer […] is the gentle killer brat once more. [...] Mühe and Dwyer transform the primetime problem film into a disturbing and intelligent piece of television: a psycho shocker from the battlefields of youth. "
