People without a Fatherland is a UFA propaganda feature film from 1937. It is set against the backdrop of the Free Corps battles of 1919 in the Baltic States and is based on the 1936 novel “The Man Without a Fatherland” by Gertrud von Brockdorff .

action

The war is lost and the Russian Bolsheviks want to invade Germany. The hopes of the fatherland rest on Lieutenant Maltzach, who with his singing soldiers keeps the enemy away from the Latvian port city of Libau . A dangerous spy in league with the seedy Baron Fahlen tries to throw weapons into the hands of the ever rebellious Libau population. The 23-year-old brown-eyed refugee girl Irene Marellus not only gets into the line of fire of the secret services, but is also trapped in a love triangle between Maltzach and Fahlen.

After Maltzach thwarted the weapons coup, the front line showdowns. With targeted fire from his artillery , Maltzach frees the future bride from the hands of the Bolsheviks. Pale is unlucky because firstly he is late and secondly is shot by the last remaining communist. To his consolation, he dies in a German uniform with the popular skull badge on a steel helmet.

background

  • The shooting locations were the Rhinluch in Brandenburg and Malchen Castle in Mecklenburg.
  • Contrary to what the film suggests, the first lieutenant's epaulets in 1919 only had one star.

criticism

"The war adventure, riddled with improbabilities and military overzealousness, was banned by the Allied military governments after 1945."
