Messner is a German film biography from 2012 by director Andreas Nickel about the extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner .
content
Using documentary recordings and photos, interviews with Messner, his family members, companions and critics, the film depicts the most important stages in the life and work of the mountaineer and allows his family history and childhood in South Tyrol to be recreated (in scenes re-enacted by actors) . The biography is divided into nine chapters, which are titled trust, rebellion, morality, responsibility, reproach, self-examination, Mount Everest, knowledge and farewell.
Born in 1944, Messner grew up in Villnöß in a family with nine children on his parents' chicken farm. Messner's brother Günther was also a passionate mountaineer. He was killed in the Nanga Parbat expedition in 1970, which was a serious turning point in Reinhold Messner's life. Between 1970 and 1986 Messner made 25 attempted and 18 successful eight-thousander climbs. In the film, Messner describes anarchy (“no power for anyone”) as the perfect form of democracy.

- Reinhold Messner's own children Gabriel and Aaron play himself and his brother Günther as young people in the film.

Reviews
“Documentary about the South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who was the first person to climb all eight-thousand-meter mountains. Without freezing in awe of the protagonist's achievements, he uses a mixture of archive material, interview scenes and re-enacted recordings to create the impressive psychogram of a man who always explored his personal limits and had to accept severe losses and setbacks. "
“With his docudrama, director Andreas Nickel [..] creates a haunting portrait of the polarizing person Reinhold Messner, also from the perspective of those closest to him, and explores the mystery of what drives the extreme mountaineer. He always lets exciting climbing scenes flow in. "
“Curiosity, a thirst for freedom and unshakable belief in yourself - that is what sets Messner apart, and in an unusually strong way. An exciting person, an exciting film - as exciting as a thriller. "
