Michael Cramer (politician)
Michael Cramer (born June 16, 1949 in Gevelsberg ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 2004 to 2019 he was a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to January 2017 as Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) .
Life and work
After graduating from high school in 1969 at Reichenbach-Gymnasium in Ennepetal , Michael Cramer studied music , sport and education at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1974 he passed the first state examination and, after completing his legal clerkship at the Ernst-Abbe-Oberschule in Berlin-Neukölln, the second state examination for teaching at grammar schools. From 1977 to 1995 he worked as a teacher at the Albrecht-Dürer-Gymnasium in Berlin-Neukölln .
In July 2018 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for the project “Iron Curtain Trail” / “Europa-Radweg Eiserner Vorhang”.
Political party
In 1986 Michael Cramer became a member of the Alternative List for Democracy and Environmental Protection (AL) in Berlin, the predecessor of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Berlin party .
MP
From 1989 to 2004 Michael Cramer was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . Here he was transport policy spokesman for the Green Group and from 1989 to 1990 chairman of the Committee on Transport and Enterprises. In addition to other committees, he was also a member of the Europe Committee. During his time as a member of parliament , Cramer held several teaching positions at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. There he taught in the political science department on the subjects of transport and urban policy.
Michael Cramer has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 .
As a member of the Committee for Transport and Tourism (TRAN) , he was the transport policy spokesman for the group The Greens / European Free Alliance from 2004 to 2014 .
From July 2014 to January 2017, he was Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. He was the only committee chairman appointed by the Group of The Greens / European Free Alliance in Parliament and a member of the Conference of Committee Chairs . Her successor as committee chairman was the French Green MP Karima Delli . Cramer continues to serve on the committee.
He was also a member of the delegations for relations with Australia and New Zealand . Cramer is also a member of the delegation for relations with North Macedonia .
He is also an authorized member of the Committee for EU Affairs in the German Bundestag.
As a member of the European Parliament, Cramer campaigned against the expansion of the Austrian Southern Railway as part of the Baltic Adriatic Axis and against the construction of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link . Cramer advocated the establishment of the 160-km long Berlin Wall bike path s and the European Iron Curtain Trail ( Iron Curtain Trail ).
Despite his official support for the series of demonstrations "Freedom instead of fear", Cramer voted on September 12, 2018 with six other out of a total of eleven German MPs from the Greens / EFA group for the draft of an EU copyright reform , which, due to aspects such as upload filters and Ancillary copyright is controversial. Specializing primarily in transport policy, he had not made any public statements on the subject until then.
He did not run for the 2019 European elections .
Memberships
Michael Cramer is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament and official co-supporter of the surveillance-critical data protection demonstration " Freedom instead of fear ", which has been held since 2006 .
From 2010 to 2014 he was deputy chairman of the “Rail Forum Europe”, and since September 2014 he has chaired the committee. The “Rail Forum Europe” is a cross-party dialogue platform, the aim of which is to simplify the discourse between the European Parliament, the European Commission, the member states and the European railway sector.
