Michael von Reineke ( Russian Михаил Францевич Рейнеке Michail Franzewitsch Rejneke ; also Reinecke or Reinken , * November 10th July / November 22nd  1801 greg. On the Grothusenshof estate near Wenden in Livonia ; † April 17th July / 29th April  1859 greg. In Frankfurt am Main ) was a Baltic German Vice Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy and hydrograph in Russian service. He was a member of the Russian Geographical Society and a close friend of Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov , the defender of Sevastopol .

Early life

Reineke was the son of resident Grothusenshof and in Riga active privy councilor Franz Reineke (1746-1821). He received his initial education in his parents' house and from 1812 in a boarding school in Saint Petersburg . He was a childhood friend of the Bestuschew brothers (Michail, Alexander ). Together with these, Reineke entered the naval cadet institute in 1814 , and in June 1815 he became an ensign . From 1818 Reineke served as a squadron adjutant to the captain-commander EP Götzen in Kronstadt and was promoted to lieutenant in March 1823.

Expeditions and career

On his first expedition in 1824 he sailed the White Sea on the brig Ketti under the command of DA Demidow . This expedition did not bring the desired results, but Reinecke gained his first experience in the field of practical hydrography . In February 1826 he became the leader of an expedition to Lapland. He described the coasts of the Kola Bay , the Tuloma River and western Lapland . In the same year he received a brig and two schooners that were specially developed for the White Sea.

From 1826 to 1852 he made a series of hydrological expeditions to the Barents Sea , Baltic Sea and the White Sea . In 1832 he was awarded the Order of Anne, 3rd class and promoted to lieutenant captain.

In 1833 he published the Atlas of the White Sea and the Coast of Lapland , for which he was honored with the Demidow Prize . In 1840, at his suggestion, the Kronstadt gauge was set up, and in the same year he was promoted to captain. On December 6, 1849, he was promoted to major general. In 1853 he fell ill and on medical advice visited the Crimea for a cure. He was friends with Admiral Nakhimov and was an eyewitness to the Crimean War. In June 1855 Reineke returned to Saint Petersburg , in August 1855 was promoted to Vice Admiral. In December 1857 he was retired for health reasons, and in May 1858 he traveled to Bad Schwalbach to heal , in September to Heidelberg and in April 1859 to Wiesbaden. On the evening of April 15, 1859, Reinecke reached Frankfurt am Main , where he died the next day.
