After being on the basis of its own experience as a choral conductor and singers a theological concept musical pastoral care had developed Heymel noted the importance of Hymns and Hymn for the pastoral care and sat down in the homiletics for greater use of examples from the sermon history one. Together with Christian Möller , he published the collection Sternstunden der Sermon (2010) and interpretations of Søren Kierkegaard's edifying speeches ( The Dare to Be One , 2013). His biography of Niemöller, written at short notice on behalf of the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft Darmstadt, was presented in January 2017 on his 125th birthday in the Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt and received international attention. At the invitation of Maison Heinrich Heine in Paris , Heymel presented Niemöller as a major figure of German Protestantism in a panel discussion in February 2018 .

The first monograph on the German cultural philosopher Walter Schubart and an edition of previously unpublished letters and writings by the pastor and songwriter Arno Pötzsch emerged from independent research projects .
