Michael Schaefer (diplomat)

Michael Schaefer (* 1949 ) is a retired German diplomat . He has been Chairman of the Board of Management of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt since July 1, 2013 .

Life

Schaefer first attended the Ratsgymnasium in Hanover before he graduated from the Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium in Graefelfing near Munich . Between 1969 and 1974 he studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Geneva . In 1974 he completed his studies with the first state examination in law in Munich. He then worked as a research assistant at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva until 1975, and from 1976 to spring 1977 as an intern in the Department of Political Affairs of the UN Secretariat and at the United Nations Security Council in New York City . In 1975/76 and 1977/1978 he completed his legal preparatory service in Heidelberg , which he completed in 1978 with the second state examination in law.

In 1978 he entered the diplomatic service . After completing his training as an attaché from 1980 to 1981, he worked in the Office of State Secretaries at the Federal Foreign Office. During this time he also received his doctorate as Dr. iur. at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg and the University of Mannheim .

From 1981 to 1984 he was political advisor at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, from 1984 to 1987 advisor in the United Nations policy department at the Foreign Office in Bonn .

From 1987 to 1991 he was permanent representative of the Ambassador in Singapore , and between 1991 and 1995 he was head of training for the higher service at what is now the Foreign Service Academy . During his activity as head of the political department at the Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva from 1995 to 1999, he was also a member of the German delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission based there .

From 1999 he headed the Western Balkans Special Staff at the Federal Foreign Office. In 2001 he was appointed Deputy Head of the Political Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin . As Deputy Political Director, he was also the representative for stability policy in Southeast Europe . Afterwards he was head of the legal department of the Foreign Office for a short time between September and October 2002, before he became head of the political department and thus political director of the foreign ministry in November 2002.

After almost five years as Political Director, he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the People's Republic of China from August 2007 to June 2013 . He resigned from the Federal Republic of Germany's Foreign Service at the end of June 2013.

Since July 2013, Dr. Schaefer Chairman of the Board of Management of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt (reorganized into the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt in 2016 ).
