Michael Wagner (born November 18, 1965 in Munich ) is a German microbiologist and university professor .

Michael Wagner attended the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium in Garching near Munich from 1975 to 1984 . He then did military service and from 1986 studied biology with a focus on microbiology , genetics , immunology and clinical chemistry at the Technical University of Munich . In 1992 he passed the diploma . In 1995 he was at Karl-Heinz Schleifer with the work The application of microbial in situ hybridization probes to investigate population structures in wastewater treatment to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . In 1995/1996 he worked on a grant from the German Research Foundation as a post-doctoral student at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. After his return he was a research associate from 1996 to 1998 and a research assistant at the chair for microbiology at the Technical University of Munich until 2000 . In 2000 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the molecular analysis of structure-function relationships of complex microbial communities at the Faculty of Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich, obtained the license to teach the field of microbiology and became a private lecturer at the chair of microbiology. Since 2003 he has been Professor of Microbial Ecology at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna and heads the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Research; He has been a member of the Senate of the University of Vienna since 2009 .

Michael Wagner researches bacteria and archaea , which play a central role in the global nitrogen cycle , and focuses on nitrifying microorganisms. To this end, he developed new methods and techniques, for example the combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization and microautoradiography . For the functional analysis of microbial cells in samples from the environment and medicine, he used confocal Raman microspectroscopy and the nano secondary ion mass spectrometer . In more recent research he uses optical tweezers and microfluid technology .

Wagner and his team discovered new genera and species of nitrifying bacteria and archaea and were able to demonstrate a physiological diversity within this group of microbes. In 2015, at the same time as Michael Wagner and a Dutch group led by Mike Jetten , the team discovered the so-called Comammox microbes, which oxidize ammonia completely to nitrate without having to rely on another group of microbes. Wagner and his team succeeded in isolating the Comammox organism Nitrospira inopinata as a pure culture.

In 2011 he received the ERC Advanced Investigators Grant from the European Research Council for his research on nitrifying microorganisms .
