Michaela Kardeis (* March 5, 1972 in Salzburg as Michaela Pfeifenberger ) was Director General for Public Security in the Austrian Ministry of the Interior until the beginning of April 2019 . Before that, she was Regional Police Vice President of the Regional Police Directorate in Vienna .

Career

Michaela Kardeis joined the State of Salzburg after completing her law studies at the University of Salzburg (Mag. Iur. 1995, Dr. iur. 1996) , where she worked in the office for women's issues and equal treatment. From 1997 to 1999 she was responsible for the areas of commercial and construction law in the Salzburg-Umgebung district administration. From 1999 to 2000 she moved to the presidential department of the State of Salzburg, and then worked in the cabinet of Interior Minister Ernst Strasser until 2001.

In 2001 she was the first head of a police security authority in Austria to take up her position as Police Director of the Federal Police Directorate (BPD) in Schwechat. However, she only held this position until 2002. This year she was provisionally entrusted with the office of Police Vice-President in the Federal Police Directorate in Vienna . Later she was definitively appointed to this position, which exists in personal union with the head of the presidential department. Your immediate superior was the police chief , at the time and now as regional police chief of Vienna Gerhard Pürstl (before that Peter Stiedl ).

Kardeis became known to a wider public when she was reported several times by the then State Police Commander of Vienna, Roland Horngacher , in the course of the abuse of authority affairs in the Vienna police in 2006 . These reports, among other things because of the disclosure of official secrets, were discontinued by the public prosecutor's office due to the baselessness of the accusations.

Kardeis was considered one of the possible candidates to succeed Police President Stiedl, but did not apply for this post. As part of the restructuring of the security authorities in 2012 , she was appointed State Police Vice President of Vienna. In January 2017 she took on a position in the General Directorate for Public Safety as a “specialist for trend monitoring, social development, leadership development and health-promoting leadership”.

In August 2017 it was announced that Kardeis would succeed Konrad Kogler as General Director for Public Safety. She finally took over the office on September 1, 2017. In autumn 2019, she is to become a liaison officer in the United States and was replaced on an interim basis by Reinhard Schnakl as Director General Directorate for Public Security on April 1, 2019.
