Michelle Hurst (born June 1, 1942 in Brooklyn , New York) is an American actress , best known for her role as Miss Claudette Pelage in the first season of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black .
life and career
Hurst was born in Brooklyn , New York. In 1974 she graduated from Mount Holyoke College . She began her career in the theater and also appeared in film and television from the 1990s. Hurst is known for various roles in Law & Order episodes. She starred in films like Airheads , Smoke , Stepmom, and Sherrybaby .
2013 Hurst played the role of Miss Claudette Pelage in the first season Netflix series Orange Is the New Black . For this role, Hurst received the Satellite Award for Best Cast - Television Series along with the other leading roles . She left the series after the first season.
At Christmas 2013, Hurst was seriously injured in a car accident. She was placed in an artificial coma for 16 days to allow surgery near her spine.
In January 2015, Hurst appeared in the third season of the British television series Last Tango in Halifax .
