action

Accountant Jonathan Mardukas embezzles $ 15 million as an employee of mafia chief Jimmy Serrano and gives it to charities. Then he settles down. He is arrested and bail Eddie Moscone bailed him out to $ 450,000. However, Mardukas resigns again and Moscone fears he will have to write off his $ 450,000. He is supposed to be saved by bounty hunter Jack Walsh, a former police officer from Chicago. This should track down Mardukas in New York and bring him to Los Angeles within five days. As a reward, he should receive $ 100,000.

The FBI , represented by Alonzo Mosely, is also interested in tracking down Mardukas. You want him to testify against Serrano. Mosely presses Walsh. He shouldn't interfere in the search for Mardukas and should leave the field to the FBI. Walsh is not impressed and steals Mosely's ID card.

Walsh tracks down Mardukas, arrests him and wants to fly with him to Los Angeles. However, Madurkas feigns severe fear of flying, so they have to cover the distance by train. Walsh uses Mosely's ID several times and his occasional calls to the bond office are overheard by the FBI. This information also reaches the Mafia through a corrupt employee of Moscone. The increasingly nervous Moscone also hires the bounty hunter Dorfler, who still has an account with Walsh.

The FBI, the Mafia and Dorfler are pursuing Walsh and Mardukas, but are always one step behind at first. Mardukas also tries to escape, but Walsh catches him again. In Arizona, Mardukas is kidnapped by Dorfler. He wants to hand him over to Serrano's men for a fee, but is then overwhelmed by them, and Madurkas falls into the hands of the Mafia.

Walsh pretends to the Mafia that he has computer disks containing the incriminating material that Mardukas has collected. He wants to exchange these for Mardukas. The handover staged by the FBI at the airport in Las Vegas is screwed up by the unsuspecting Dorfler. In the end, Serrano is arrested by the FBI.

Walsh releases Mardukas. He reciprocated by giving Walsh a money belt that contains around $ 300,000.

Reviews

Roger Ebert praised Robert De Niro's performance in the Chicago Sun-Times on July 20, 1988. After his appearance in Brazil , he once again managed to bring out his comical side to the full. Ebert certifies that the two main actors understand how to combine elements of a comedy with the elements of a thriller in a convincing way.

Joachim Schätz praised the portrayals of Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin on www.filmzentrale.com, who was supposed to mix callousness and naivety in his play. He described the script as efficient but not elegant, the characters as intelligent, and the film as fast-paced.

Awards

Robert De Niro and the film were Best Comedy in 1989 for the Golden Globe nominated. Charles Grodin won an award at the Valladolid International Film Festival in 1988 .

title

A midnight run ( English as "midnight excursion") is in American English to bring about beer or cigarettes a short, spätabendlicher shopping trip. In the film, the bond office owner promises the bounty hunter that the job will be a "midnight run", in this context an easy and quick job. In addition, the fugitive must be delivered by midnight on Friday - in this respect too, the order is a “midnight run”.
