Vouvry is a political municipality and a civil parish in the district of Monthey in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

geography

The municipal area of 33.54 km² essentially comprises a section of the Rhone plain in the east and a side valley through which the Le Fossau brook flows and the adjacent mountains in the west. In the far west, on the border with France, is the Col de Verne (1814 m), which can be passed on foot and leads to La Chapelle d'Abondance (F). In addition to the main settlement of Vouvry, the hamlet of Barges is located in the section of the Rhone plain belonging to the municipality . To the west of the main settlement area, a winding road leads to the Vésenand settlement , which is located on a raised terrace and offers an exceptional view towards the southeast of the Rhone Valley. The road continues west into the valley and leads to Miex and finally ends in Le Flon . From here you can climb to Lac de Tanay.

Lac de Tanay

The Lac de Tanay and the hamlet of Tanay are located in a valley, nestled between steep cliffs and tall fir trees . The idyllic surroundings of the lake and the extraordinary flora and fauna (especially the amphibians found on the shore area ) are of national importance. That is why there has been a nature reserve here since the 1960s .

history

At Tanay there is a ledge (Abri) under which 35,000 year old traces of settlement have been found. In 1018 the parish of Vouvry came into the possession of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice. Since 1536 the area belonged to the Valais Landvogtei Monthey.

It was not until 1798 that Vouvry, Tanay and Miex merged to form a community.

To the north of the main settlement of Vouvry lies the Porte du Scex narrow point between a mountain spur and the Rhone . This place was an important traffic point in the past, because from here you head north to Le Bouveret ( Port-Valais ) and finally to France, east over the Rhone to Aigle or Villeneuve VD - Vevey - Montreux and south into Valais comes ( Monthey ). Today, in addition to the cantonal road, the Evian - Saint-Maurice railway line passes the Porte du Scex bottleneck. The castle above the rock of the Porte du Scex was probably built in the High Middle Ages . It served as a collection point for the customs fees that had to be paid on passage. The current castle complex dates mostly from 1678 and belongs to the municipality of Vouvry.

The wooden bridge over the Rhone from Porte-du-Scex to Chessel , built in 1838, was replaced by a railway bridge in 1903.

The Chavalon thermal power station , which was decommissioned in 1999 and is Switzerland's only oil-fired thermal power station ( Centrale Thermique de Vouvry ), stands high above the Rhone Valley .
