Michael "Mike" McCarthy (born June 26, 1968 in Brooklyn , New York ) is a retired American cyclist .

In 1986 Mike McCarthy was national junior road champion. At the UCI Track World Championships in 1990 in Maebashi , he finished third in the single pursuit of the amateurs; two years later he became world champion in this discipline in Valencia . Twice - in 1988 and 1996 - McCarthy took part as a member of the US track four in the Olympic Games, but without medal success.

During his time as a professional racing driver, McCarthy drove numerous smaller road races that he was able to win, including the "New York City Championship" (1994, 1997), the "Tour of Christiana" (1994) and the "Bermuda Grand Prix" (1998 ). The commitment to a European racing team did not materialize in 1993 because the sponsor withdrew shortly before the start of the season.

McCarthy then drove in six-day races until the doctors found him infected with the Epstein-Barr virus . He later had a heart operation.
