The Minorite Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Arad ( Romanian Biserica Sfântul Anton de Padova din Arad , popularly also called Catholic Cathedral of Arad , Romanian Catedrala Catolică din Arad , called) is a Roman Catholic church of the Minorite Order in the I. District Centru of the city of Arad in Romania .

history

The Catholic Church began its activity in Arad at the end of the 17th century when Franciscan Minorites and the imperial army settled in the Arad fortress , where the first Catholic church was built. The Minorites also preached in the civil settlement and helped establish the city's first Catholic church at the beginning of the 18th century.

The foundation stone of the Catholic Church in Arad was laid on April 3, 1751 by Bishop Engl von Wagrain . On April 13, 1758, the church was consecrated and handed over to the Minorites. The order also looked after the Catholic community in downtown Arad. In 1901-1903 the old church was demolished and there was a new church building, which on October 2, 1911 consecrated was.

description

The new church was built in the neo-baroque style. The outer facade shows two projecting pairs of Corinthian columns , between which the entrance portal is located. A narrow barrel vault is located above the entrance , which leads to the tympanum with a Pietà . A three-part architrave follows the columns . The surrounding cornice shows niches with figures in the middle. This component is crowned by two putti . A dome rises above it . The tambour is divided by two Ionic half- columns. The dome itself is covered by broad ribs that lead to the lantern and end in the cross. In the pronaos is the Holy Trinity , a bronze group by the sculptor Johann Rona .

Organ history

In 1871 a new gallery was built in the church. The organ builder Karl Janicsek from Pressburg supplied the new organ. A few years later, Anton Dangl built a new organ for the church. This instrument was renovated in 1905 by Carl Leopold Wegenstein from Timisoara and placed in the church of the municipality of Kövegy in Csanád county , where it can still be heard today. The organ builder Otto Rieger from Budapest built the Opus for the new church . This large instrument has a pneumatic play and stop action , 3 manuals and pedal and two console tables : one for weekday services and one for Sundays and public holidays.
