action

The main character of this family melodrama is Accio Benassi, called "the disgust". The story begins in 1962 and shows the young Accio as a convinced Catholic in the convent school. He was supposed to be a priest, but because of bad behavior, he is thrown from school and returns to his family. Accio constantly feels set back towards his older siblings Manrico and Violetta. He tries to run away from home but is brought back by the police. In the fabric dealer he found a friend who taught him to drive and who was enthusiastic about the ideas of fascism. On the one hand out of conviction, on the other hand out of defiance of his siblings, who are communists , the young Accio joins the party of the fascists ( MSI ). His siblings confront him. Manrico regularly rubs Accio off to drive him out of his political ideas, but to no avail.

Unlike Accio, Manrico is a heartthrob. His friend Francesca, whom he often relocates, believes in communism like him. They meet in the Benassis' small apartment, where the family lives together in a confined space. While Accio, who actually prefers Latin, is studying math for school, he hears his brother and girlfriend making love. Although they are politically hostile, Accio soon takes a liking to Francesca herself, but she only sees him as a good friend. When Francesca leaves town, she and Accio stay in touch.

The brothers are very active politically. Manrico, who works in the factory, organizes a. a. a strike. Accio goes to Rome with his party friends and takes part in militant actions. While Accio, who also offends his party friends, gradually distanced himself from fascism, Manrico radicalized himself.

The inexperienced in love Accio begins a liaison with Bella, whose husband Mario is imprisoned. When Mario comes out of prison, Accio has meanwhile switched to the communists. After Accio and Manrico have carried out an attack on the fascist party headquarters, Accio is caught by Mario, who found out about his wife's affair. While beating Accio, Mario suddenly dies of heart failure. Accio flees to Manrico's friends in the country for a year.

Manrico's rebellion culminates in a robbery in which he steals a lot of money from the factory owner and inflicts a gunshot wound on him. However, he denies Accio was involved in the crime. Manrico moves to northern Italy and leaves Francesca with their son. When, a long time later, Accio was supposed to bring his brother a bag of money to Turin, Accio also contacted Francesca. This drives to the meeting of the brothers, but leads the police to Manrico. Manrico dies in an exchange of fire with the police. Francesca is arrested for complicity. Accio returns to his family with his nephew. At night he breaks into the housing office and steals the keys to vacant apartments by the sea and a list of people who, like his family, are urgently waiting for a new apartment. He contacts the families listed and arranges for them to move that same night. The Benassis are also getting a new apartment.

Interesting

The film takes place for the most part in the city of Latina , the first fascist test-tube city to be built in the drained Pontine Marshes .

The same screenwriters (Sandro Petraglia and Stefano Rulli) also wrote the film The Best Years , which also tells the story of two brothers with different political experiences over a long period of time.

"It is no small achievement to make a film about the epoch between the early 60s and the beginning of the leaden time in the early 70s, in which not a single Vespa is featured."

The film title quotes a song by Rino Gaetano .

criticism

“Impressive coming-of-age film with a brilliant lead actor. Virtuously combines the history of the brothers with a review of political and social developments. "

"Ultimately, however, Luchetti's film proves to be a warm-hearted, spirited, very Italian family story in which an outsider finds his way after all sorts of trials and tribulations."
