Staff, funding and film title

Directed by Radu Jude , who also wrote the script. In writing the dialogues, Jude received support from the Romanian writer and theater director Florin Lazarescu, who had already worked on his film Aferim! was involved in the scriptwriting. The film is a joint production by Romania with Bulgaria, Germany, France and the Czech Republic.

Ion Antonescu at a meeting with Adolf Hitler in Munich in June 1941

The film title, in the original Îmi este indiferent daca în istorie from intra ca barbar , which translates as “I don't care whether we go down in history as barbarians”, alludes to a speech by the Romanian politician Mihai Antonescu who said it said in the Council of Ministers in the summer of 1941 when the “ethnic cleansing” began on the Eastern Front. The film tries to comment on this statement. In the Odessa massacre in October 1941, Romanian occupation forces murdered around 25,000 Jews. Romania was an ally of National Socialist Germany at the time, and there is still a lot of admiration for “Hitler's forgotten allies” in Romania today.

The director said he tried to draw attention to a chapter in the history of his homeland that had been hidden for decades: “I study history in order to find a connection to the present. My film deals with the lack of memories of these events in contemporary Romanian society. In addition, it should show possibilities to describe the ethnic cleansing of the Romanian army from today's perspective. I don't believe history repeats itself. But we will also see in the present that there is racism and anti-Semitism as well as the denial of genocide. That is why a story from that time matters to us. And that's why I connect the present with the past. "

One reason to address the issue, Jude said in an interview with Variety's Will Tizard , was that he belonged to a generation that had been lied to and that never told anyone about the dark parts of Romanian history. The denial of the Holocaust in Romania no longer exists on an official level today, and the statues of the Romanian war leader Ion Antonescu have all been removed from public places, which for Jude could have been conditions for Romania's accession to the EU.

Karsten Munt explains in his review what the headwind that Mariana Marin experiences during her staging looks like: “The victims' actors are completely overwhelmed by the directing instruction to cry for their lives, the old men who are the“ dirty Jews ” (as they call themselves) do not want to be mixed with the Roma and a particularly brazen Wehrmacht actor tries to incite his colleagues against the "anti-Romanian work". "

Of the film magazine epd film was I do not care if we as barbarians in history determined to film the month of May of 2019. There it says: “The conversations between actors, producers, onlookers and the director show the current tension that comes with dealing with this dark chapter in Romanian history. Sometimes it comes off in laughter. In the end, it discharges in a brilliant finale that raises questions. There is no end to coming to terms with the past . It has to be constantly updated because the past is not past. "
