Here the song was also the most successful non-English-language production of all time.
background
In 1999, Alizée appeared in the talent show Graines de Star on the French television channel M6 . Originally she wanted to take part in the dance competition, but only groups were allowed to participate. Instead, she took part in the singing competition, where she performed the titles “Waiting for Tonight” by Jennifer Lopez and “Ma Prière” by Axelle Red . She won the Meilleure Graine Prize as a promising young artist. This caught the attention of composers Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat . They were looking for new talent for a new project and agreed to test recordings with Alizée.
The text of the song shows references to the biography of its author Mylène Farmer.
reception
New Musical Express's Peter Robinson reviewed the song, saying:
“It's pop as pop should be: the perfect marriage of innocence and experience of which the French, from Birkin to Paradis, have always seemed overwhelmingly capable. All this plus it has one of the most electrifying middle eights ever committed to record. "
“It's pop the way pop should be: the perfect combination of innocence and experience that the French, from Birkin to Paradis, always seemed extremely capable of. All of that, plus one of the most electrifying bridges that has ever been recorded. "
Video
The video for the single was directed by Laurent Boutonnat and first shown on July 26, 2000 on M6 .
In the first part of the video, she flees from a man who confesses his love to her and wants to pay her for it. She later flees with her little sister from their mother to the Paris nightclub Les Bains Douches , where she dances, has fun and sings the song in flashes.
