action
The story takes place in the 18th century. The orphan Flora travels to America with Hibble who cares for her. On the way, Hibble Flora tells the story of her mother Moll Flanders, who also grew up as an orphan. Her pregnant mother was sentenced to death for theft and executed. The daughter Moll Flanders, who was born in prison shortly before her execution, is raised in a monastery where she is abused by a priest. She flees the monastery and finds herself penniless in London . She later works as a prostitute for Mrs. Allworthy. Flanders befriends Mrs. Allworthy's servant Hibble, who takes care of her and looks after her. She falls in love with an artist who comes from a wealthy family but lives modestly. She has a child from him. The artist dies.
As a penniless woman she is forced by Mrs. Allworthy to travel with her to the new world and to leave behind her child, believed to be dead. On the crossing, her belief that her child is still alive grows stronger. Their ship capsizes and only Flanders and the servant Hibble survive. The two decide that Flanders will assume the identity of their old mistress. It was also she who sent Hibble to get her daughter.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of June 14, 1996 that the film was more pensive and thoughtful than sensational . The plot is only inspired by the main character of the novel, but deviates from this in essential points. The main actress does not seem convincing in her role. The film does not idealize the past like meaning and sensuality , but shows the details faithfully like restoration - time of sensuality .
Cinema magazine wrote that the film was " entertaining ", " told in flashbacks " and was only loosely based on the novel. He was " touching and rough, but never sensational ".
