history

The Islamic Fortress (Ribat) in Monastir

Along with Kairouan and Sousse, Monastir is one of the first Arab settlements founded in Ifrīqiya and was built on the ruins of the ancient Phoenician-Roman city of Ruspina . The fortress of Monastir ( Ribat ) was on the orders of the Abbasid - Caliph Harun al-Rashid built in 796 to protect against attacks by the Byzantine fleets in the Mediterranean and was with the Ribat of Sousse considered the most important fort along the Tunisian coast (Sahel). According to local historical news from the early 10th century, the stay in this ribat - known as al-qaṣr al-kabīr = the Great Fortress - was particularly meritorious: a three-day post service in Monastir guaranteed everyone a place in paradise. The fortress was therefore regarded by fighters and ascetics alike as a kind of place of pilgrimage and meditation on religious occasions, such as the Ashura festival and the fasting month of Ramadan .

A small mosque with a mihrāb was housed on the upper floor of the southeast wing . Today these rooms are used as a museum with exhibits from the region and Kairouan .

Today Monastir is an important university town with, for example, a medical faculty. One fifth of their population are students. With Sousse and Sfax , the city and its port developed into a hub for the olive oil trade . It has been one of the most important centers of the tourism industry in Tunisia since the mid-1960s.

Monastir is part of the network of the national railway SNCFT . With the so-called Métro du Sahel , Monastir is connected to Mahdia on the one hand and Sousse on the other.

The Monastir Airport is located eight kilometers from the city center. The most important tourist airport in Tunisia until 2011, it has lost much of its importance after the opening of Enfidha Airport .
