The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens or abbreviated: SNCFT , Arabic الشركة الوطنية للسكك الحديدية التونسية, DMG aš-Šarika al-waṭaniyya li-s-sikak al-ḥadīdiyya at-tūnisiyya , is the state railway established in Tunisia after independence in 1956 . The SNCFT operates long-distance, local and freight traffic by rail as well as part of the suburban traffic in the capital Tunis . In 2007, the SNCFT carried 40 million passengers and 11 million tons of freight .

history

The SNCFT was founded by decree on December 27, 1956 to administer the northern part of the Tunisian railway network. The southern part of the network, in particular the Sfax - Gafsa - Métlaoui line and the lines in the mining triangle, remained in the possession of the Compagnie des phosphates et des chemins de fer de Gafsa (CFG), which had also received a concession for this network as early as 1897 . When this expired on December 31, 1966, this network fell to the Tunisian state, which also transferred the routes to the SNCFT on January 1, 1967, so that the SNCFT has owned almost the entire Tunisian railway infrastructure since 1967 . Only the Métro léger de Tunis and the railway line from Tunis to La Marsa are not operated by SNCFT, but by Société des transports de Tunis .

organization

The SNCFT is under the supervision of the Minister of Transport. It is based in Tunis. She is a legal person , financially autonomous and a businessman in terms of commercial law . The Lézard Rouge (red lizard ), which runs on meter gauge from Métlaoui to Seldja , is geared towards the tourist market . The SNCFT operates this train with historic wagons from the Beys court train of Tunis. Between Sousse, Sahline, Monastir, Moknine and Mahdia, the SNCFT also operates the Métro du Sahel , u. a. with a stop at Monastir Airport . In 2007 the SNCFT promoted:

Freight transport

The freight of SNCFT consists of about 75% of phosphate -Transporten. In addition, the iron transport is important. The Tunisian railway network

The SNCFT operates 2167 km of route, of which:

  • 471 km standard gauge ;

267 train stations and stops .

Meter gauge

The most important meter-gauge route of the SNCFT is the Ligne de la Côte, which connects Tunis with Sfax. It is also the fastest meter-gauge route in the world.

future plans

An expansion of the SNCFT route network is currently planned in south-east Tunisia. Libya is building a standard gauge line along the Mediterranean Sea , which will connect Libya to the Egyptian rail network in the east . This line is to be continued across the Libyan-Tunisian border at Ras Ejder to Gabès, Tunisia , where the standard-gauge line is to connect to the Tunisian meter-gauge network. Work on this has already begun on the Libyan side, but the political situation there has brought work to a standstill. Further information under the Ras Ejder – Sirt railway line .
