Money for Nothing is a compilation by the British rock band Dire Straits . It was released by Phonogram , Vertigo Records, and Warner Bros. Records in the fall of 1988 .

Creation and publication

After the tour of the successful album Brothers in Arms , the band suddenly disappeared from the scene and there were rumors that they would break up.

It was only in June 1988 that Dire Straits returned for a concert for Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday. In October of that year a best-of compilation with (partly newly mixed or shortened) pieces from all previous releases came on the market. It was named after the hit single Money for Nothing and became a chart success itself.
