Moritz Gerhard Thilenius
Moritz Gerhard Thilenius (born April 30, 1745 in Eddigehausen , † January 29, 1808 in Wiesbaden ) was a German doctor and balneologist .
Life
Moritz Gerhard Thilenius is the founder of a balneological dynasty that later settled in Bad Soden am Taunus and was to have a decisive influence on the development of this Taunus bath from the 19th to the 20th century. Moritz Gerhard Thilenius came from a family of doctors. His father was the "wandering" doctor Johann Heinrich Thilenius and his grandfather Jacob Thilenius has been handed down as a "Bruchschneider". Thilenius grew up in Eddigehausen, a small village below Plesse Castle not far from Göttingen . The rule of Plesse was a Hessian exclave in the Electorate of Hanover. Moritz Gerhard Thilenius began studying medicine at the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 1761 . His studies were spectacularly interrupted by the fact that he was kidnapped as a "tall guy" on behalf of his sovereign Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel to Kassel and used as a soldier. The authorities of the University of Göttingen made it clear in a petition to the Landgrave that they were willing to take this case to the English King George III. Wanting to present directly, so that Friedrich was forced to leave. After this interlude, Thilenius completed his studies in 1765 with a doctorate. med. and began his medical practice initially in Göttingen, but moved from there to Einbeck in 1771 . Shortly thereafter, he received a call from Einbeck from the Hessian noble family of Johann Wilhelm Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach (1705–1782), who resided at Schloss Eisenbach in Lauterbach, Hesse . In 1783 in Lauterbach he introduced the vaccination against the leaves . In 1796 he became court and bath doctor in Wiesbaden, 1801 Cameralmedicus in Wetzlar . In 1803 he became the personal physician of Prince Friedrich August von Nassau-Usingen with the character of a privy councilor in Usingen .
His sons Christian Heinrich Thilenius (1776–1818) and Otto Heinrich Thilenius (1800–1869) also became well-known balneologists.
