Eddigehausen is a district of the borough Bovenden in southern Lower Saxony (Germany).

geography

Eddigehausen is located in the Mulde between the southwest foothills of the Wittenberg (386 m above sea level , in the northeast; with Plesse Castle ), the Ibenberg (388 m, in the east) and the Hainberg (approx. 355 m, in the south), both mountains in the extreme northwest of the Göttingen Forest . The city of Göttingen is around 7 km south .

history

The Eddigehausen district was first mentioned in 1192 under the name Oddingehusen . The name means "At the houses of Otto's people". In the center of the village was the farm of Plesse Castle , which later became a domain , the building complex of which still exists in the old village today.

Since 1624, a quantity of grain has been distributed annually to the poor of the village from the income from the estate. This custom was based on a foundation by the Hessian Landgrave Juliane . After a carriage accident at the foot of the Plesse, she had committed herself and her descendants to this annual gift to the poor of Eddigehausen. It was not until the currency reform in 1948 that the foundation of this "Julian Foundation" was withdrawn, after the annual distribution by the state had already been replaced in 1939 with a one-off payment of 3,000 marks to the parish.

In the simple baroque church from Hessian times (built in 1786) hangs the "Maria" bell, cast in 1458 by a bell founder Matthias von Northeim .

Possibly the domain and the church of Eddigehausen were connected to the castle Plesse by an underground passage.

In addition, the Mariaspring spring is part of Eddigehausen. It feeds the Rauschenwasser, which once drove up to nine different mills on its short run . At the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the First World War, an excursion restaurant was built on the site of the paper mill founded by Henning Hasenbalg: the “Mariaspring dance and student paradise”. During the Second World War, the student paradise of Mariaspring was converted into a DRK military hospital. Even today, the logo of a red cross shimmers under the new facade of the folk high school. At the same time, Plesse Castle became a training camp for the Hitler Youth.

On January 1, 1973 Eddigehausen was incorporated into the Bovenden district.

politics

The local mayor is Bernd Riethig ( SPD , as of November 17  , 2011 ). He replaced his long-term predecessor Manfred Bruns ( CDU ).

There is also an AST connection between Göttingen, Bovenden and Eddigehausen. In the other direction, the bus continues via Reyershausen , Billingshausen and Spanbeck to Holzerode (sometimes further to Ebergötzen ).

Culture and sights

societies

  • On February 5, 2006 the association “Meeting point old rectory” was founded in Eddigehausen. This association made a new meeting point in Eddigehausen. There are exhibitions, lectures, concerts and much more. The association has its premises in the former rectory in Eddigehausen, where the Sparkasse previously had a branch.
  • The Eddigehausen village community is an association that sees itself as the umbrella organization of the other local associations and whose aim is to maintain the village community.
  • SV Eddigehausen from 1922 eV
  • Voluntary fire brigade, founded in 1934

Eibenwald am Hainberg

One of the largest stocks of yew trees in Germany is the yew forest on the Hainberg . It is located on the southwest slope of the Hainberg and is easily accessible from the village. In addition, easily accessible hiking trails lead through the extensive forest area . We also recommend the “Bielsteinwanderweg”, which leads from Mariaspring through a jagged valley cut to the large sandstone rocks of the Bielstein.

Ev. Church of St. Blaise

Church of St. Blasius in Eddigehausen

The St. Blasius Church is decorated with a relief of the von Plessen coat of arms . Your congregation belongs to the Evangelical Reformed Church . The construction of the church began in 1785, after the old church, which was built in 1354, appeared to be dilapidated in its cross vault as early as 1770 . However, the start of construction was to be delayed by a few years, so that the new church, in the Hessian Baroque style, could not be completed until 1786 , as an inscription above the entrance shows. The coat of arms stone from the old church was attached over the portal of the new building. The bell from 1458 also found its way into the new St. Blasius Church, as did the organ . It was not until 1861 that a new organ, built by the Heyder company in Heiligenstadt , was installed; due to heavy woodworm infestation , it had to give way to today's organ in 1972. When the street south of the church was widened, according to a report by the Göttinger Tageblatt of November 23, 1970, several corpses were discovered in a mass grave, which date from the time of the Thirty Years' War or had been victims of the plague . This find also documents a cemetery that was laid out immediately around the former church and was much larger in size than today's Thieanlage .
