In the 19th century, the place usually had well over 500 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a significant population decline since then.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline. Instead, the cultivation of walnut and chestnut trees as well as various types of fruit has been discovered again - including the newly added kiwi fruit . Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The place is first mentioned in 1333; at that time the place belonged to the English crown. The local manorial rule was exercised by the Seigneurs de Monsec , who belonged to different families and whose castle is a good kilometer north of the village.

On January 1, 2016, the Commune nouvelle Coux et Bigaroque-Mouzens was formed with the then neighboring municipality of Coux-et-Bigaroque .

Attractions

  • The little church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption stands by the cemetery. It is a rather unadorned building from the 15th or 16th century with a flat apse made of stone masonry , which is still attributed to the 12th century. In contrast, the west tower was not built until the end of the 19th century. The single nave is vaulted; the rear wall of the apse is covered by a simple baroque altarpiece with a central crucifixion image.
  • The Château de Monsec ( 44 ° 51 ′ 5.7 ″  N , 1 ° 0 ′ 59.7 ″  E ) is first mentioned in the 14th century; The two-wing and two-storey building today, however, dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and impresses with its harmonious proportions, in which late medieval and Renaissance elements are combined. The different window types are noteworthy. The castle was recognized as a monument historique in 2005 . The separately standing castle chapel is a neo-Gothic building from the 19th century.
